IF YOU do not keep clean internally your looks and health are undermined together. A clogged intestine breeds poi-sons that reach every part of the body. These poisons ruin the complexion and undermine health. Constipation brings on such ailments as headaches, bilious at-tacks and insomnia, each of which saps your health and vitality. Avoid Laxatives say Doctors Laxatives and cathartics do not overcome constipation, says a noted authority, but by their continued use tend only to ag-gravate the condition. i Medical science has found at last in lubrication a means of overcoming con-stipation. The gentle lubricant, Nujol, pen-etrates and softens the hard food waste and thus hastens its passage through and out of the body. Nujol is not a medicine or laxative and cannot gripe. Like pure water, it is harmless. Take Nujol regularly and adopt this habit of internal cleanliness. For sale by all druggists. MNiujol I For Internal Cleanliness Washington Celebration Open to World An Intention WASHINGTON. nations of the the United States In observance of the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of George Washington In 1032 Is announced by President Coolldge on behalf of the commission recently ap-pointed to arrango for the celebration of the event Setting forth the purposes for which .he commission was created the Pres-ident In hi statement said that "for the present It la Impossible more spe-cifically to suggest the purposes and character of the commemoration which it is proposed to arrange. "The two hundredth anniversary of General Washington's birth will be an occasion of such significance not only to our own country, but to the entire world that It la manifestly fitting that thu American nation should appropri-ately observe It "Hut beyond this It Is lelt that as the life, the career and the achieve-ment of Washington belong, not to a single nation, but to all humanity, It Is proper the nation founded under his leadership should Invite all other na-tions and peoples to join It In the ob-servance of this anniversary. The character, the efforts and the achieve-ments of Washington have made an Impression on the whole world, so pro-found as to have affected the very course of history and to have touched the lives of all who. today live in this world. "We cannot doubt that the in-fluence of Washington's example, the leadership which he gave in behalf of liberal Institutions and mankind's advancement, have been among th great benefaction conferred on th race. He ranlta and always will rank among the foremost of those who were providentially designated to perform great and lasting services. "Every consideration of national pride In him as an American of grati-tude for the dlHtlnctlons which he brought to us as a people, and of satlafactlon In the universal recogni-tion which has been freely rendered to hla name and memory, dictates that this nation should take the lead It such a proper acknowledgment as will make the approachlug bicentennial an occasion of universal Inspiration. "A It was the fortune of America to give such a character to the world, so It la the obligation of America to Insure that all men shall be Invited and encouraged to consider his noble example, and benefit Increasingly through a better understanding of th ideuls which animated hla life." GOOD POINTS ON SPARK CONTROL f Correct Ue of Lever Has ; Much to Do With Effi-cienc- y of Machine. s Need the position of the apark lever 4 be changed, after the car la once well - under wayT That question occurs to not a few of the less experienced automobile drlv . if era during these days when operating 4 the motor car may be classed as one t of the moat popular pastime. Intelligent and correct use of the apark lever has much to do with the efficient operation of a car and tends to Insure the proper functioning of the motor vehicle's Intricate and la many i respects delicate mechanism. Some car owners needlessly shorten the length of service they would get from their cars by carelessness in handling j the spark control. Don't Alter Position, i Except when going over unusually ' rough roada. there is no need to alter . f the position of the spark lever In ordl-- . , nary driving after It la once aet, since it is designed to run through a fairly varied range of speed. But In cllmb- - Ing a stiff grade, most motorists speed .: their cars to take the hill with a ter-- t fine rush because they do not want to shift gears. The euglne will atand this J buae for some time before It begins " k to make Its disgust audible with knocks ' and rattles. Knocks of a motor which Is laboring j In going uphill are due to premature i firing, the spark Igniting the gas on the compression stroke ; the explosion 1 tries to force the piston head back be- - 1 fore It has passed dead center, produc- - : lag a sharp metallic tliump. , This would not occur, of course, on . t m level road unless the car were very .heavily loaded, since the crankshaft , revolve fast enough to bring the pis- - f ton past dead center and on the down-- ward stroke before the pressure of the exhaust la effective, : i Should Be Advanced. . Battery Location Most Persistent Car Problem From time to time th question of storage battery location has cropped up as one of the most persistent prob-lems that the chasals dealgner la com-pelled to face. The public baa demand-ed free running boarda, and for this reason there haa been a decided drop In the number of batteries carried on them; simultaneously the under-the-se-method has grown In prominence. Battery service stations have found, however, that the heat of the engln has a marked effect on batteries car-ried under the seats In the front com-partment. If any one has had occasion to touch the tools under the seat In the course of a run on a' hot day he undoubtedly has been surprised to find the amount of hent absorbed by them. If this heat reaches the tools In th compartment, wrapped in their case, It will reach the battery well to a much greater extent, and the result Is that the water is evaporated at a rapid rat and the Instruction to the owner to refill his battery every two weeks are entirely inadequate. This Is a big problem, because It In-volves millions of dollars' worth of property. Heat must be carried away from the battery, and the blast of hot air which comes from the engine Is the worst medium that could be found to do It. If the battery must be carried under the seat, let us have the air baffled so that cool and not hot air will strike the battery container well Campaign for Ocean Memorial Starts ambition of men in the navy THE marine corps for erection of navy and marine me-morial on th Potomac river, in Washington, was brought a step near-er completion in New York city at a dinner given by the Navy and Marine Memorial association at the Army and Navy club of New York. Pointing to the seaman, the man who pilots and directs ships of the modern day, and the generations of seamen who have uiude his accom-plishments possible, as one of the greatest single forces In the progress of modern civilization. Hear Admiral Bradley A. Flake, U. S. N., retired, told the Navy and Marine Memorial association that the proposed memo-rial must be btfilt to "let the seumun know that the day of hla unrequited service has gone by and that he Is coming into the honor which he merits." "Build a memorial In Washington that shall stand before the nations," Admiral Flske said, "not only as a belated recognition of his work through all the dim and distant past, but also as an assurance of a near and brilliant future." Several hundred navy and inarln officers attended the dinner, at which the progress of the association ia raising funds for th proposed memo-rial was reviewed. Telegrams wish-ing auccess to the movement wer reud from nearly a score of persona prominent In national life, Including several goveniors of states. The me-morial, to coat approximately $500,-00- 0, will stand on a point in the Po-tomac, surrounded by water on thre sides, near the site of th Arlington memorial bridge. Designs have al-ready been prepared by Begnl del Platta, sculptor, and llnrvey Wiley Corbctt, an architect of New York. Secretary of the Navy Wilbur Is chairman of the honorary national committee, which also includes Theo-dore lloosevflt, former assistant sec-retary of the navy ; Admiral Edward W. Eberle, Admiral Robert E. Coonta, Admiral Leigh THlnier, MaJ. Gen. John A. Lejeune, commandant of the marine corps; Hear Admiral F. C. Blllnrd, chairman T. V. O'Connor of the ship-ping board and Rear Admiral William S. Benson. Many men and women prominent in public life are on th national committee. Hitlxln growers succeeded In getting raisins Into the bread, but they left them out of the oatmeal. Storage Battery Point A vital point to remember In con- - I nectlon with the storage battery la t that at a temperature of 10 degrees si Fahrenheit Its efficiency drops about f0 per cent. Algo, It is much more difficult to crank the motor because of the effect of the lower temperature on t the lubrication. Because of the In- - complete vaporization of the fuel 'jf when the motor Is cold, slightly more j cranking Is required to slurt the mo- - tor. I Handy Brake Wrench When brakes on automobile are ad--i Justed by wing nuts the owner or me--. - chanic often has considerable trouble making the adjustment because of the ? awkward location of the nut. A i wrencn that can be made In a few mln-ute- a by anyone will obviate this dlffl-- i culty. Legal Snarls Retard London Embassy ALTHOUGH congress three years ago the two London houses which J. P. Morgan gave to the United States as an American embassy. It now develops that nothing has been done to carry out the work. Wilbur J. Carr, assistant secretary of state, explained that the delay in throwing 'the two houses together 1 due to the working out of a convey-ance of title to this government that would be valid under both British and American law. "The lawyers had great difficulty In working that out and months of time were consumed," Mr. Carr stated to th house appropriations committee a short time ago, as now revealed by th printed hearings. "But before we Ing over there?" asked Representative Madden, the chairman of th commit-tee. "We have our own regulations and laws which we must comply with be-fore we can spend the money," Mr. Carr replied. "They have their own regulations and laws which they must comply with before the workmen will work and the contractors will bid, o It Is a question of getting a happy ad-justment of the two." "I've been told that nobody wants to live In the house," Mr. Madden commented. "That's not true," Mr. Caqr an-swered. " They are perfectly willing to live in th house If we can get It In order." "Everybody says It 1 a whit ele- - could approve, the . appropriation ' ' lapsed. "We still have not been able to gfet construction plans and specifications upon which we could get satisfactory blda under both laws, and It Is not ex-pected that that CHn be done by July 1, and therefore construction cannot take place thla year. That's why we are asking you to extend the unex-pended balance again." "What's the matter with the bulld- - phant; that la, everybody I have seen who has talked about it," countered Mr. Madden. Later he stated: "W had better give the house away again and let somebody else undertake to do the Job." On the assurance of Mr. Carr that the contracts would be signed about July 1 the committee agreed to allow the $1!50,000 appropriation to be con-tinued In the deficiency bill reported to the house. Wastes Oil Many drivers do not like to stop th engine when having their engines filled with oil. The result Is that the breeze from the fan blows away an appreciable quantity of oil. Thla may be prevented by wiring a tire wind-shield on the proper side of the oil measure. Careiessness Causes Trouble .f Many drivers forget that present trouble may date back to a period of carelossness when the car was coin- - ' ; pelled to carry an overweight of from 100 to 200 pounds and that the tire - ,? liad been insufficiently inflated most of the time. The fact that there la no , overload or underinflatlon at the mo-ment of the blowout proves nothing. Paint Rubber Mat Rubber matting that has been In use for some time and Is beginning to look the worse for wear, may be re-stored to respectability by painting It with d paint. This gives a varnished surface that Is not only ollproof but Is easily cleaned with cloth. ANTI-DAZZL- E LIGHTS UNDER CAR BODY A new anti-dazzl- e motor car lighting device has been Invented by A. Kei-wa- y Ramber, an Englishman. It consists of five magnifying glasses placed di-rectly under the body of the car. Illuminated by electricity, acetylene or other means, the lamp throw strong direct raya along the road beneath the vehicle, throwing the car into clear view from all aides. The front and bottom lenses are clear, the off-sid-e and back lenses are red, and the rear-sid- e lenses green. The light is passed through a small trapdoor In the floor of the car, and It Is claimed to be a simple and effective method. The photograph shows the new under-ca- r lighting device in service. This picture was taken at night and shows bow completely th car 1 illuminated by the new light. Real "Coops" Exempted From Taxation ACCORDANCE with suggestions IN President Coolldge relative of the Treasury department with agricultural in-terests, as recommended by the recent agricultural conference, Secre-tary of the Treaaury Mellon made pub-lic regulations pertaining to the tax exemption of marketing associations. A further study of the law Is being made by Solicitor Hurt son, of the bu-reau of internal revenue, to determine whether or not the bureau can fol-low out all suggestions of the confer-ence. A marketing associa-tion, preferred stock of which has been sold to persons other than pro-ducers who market their produce) through it, and which has made no provision for early redemption or re-tirement of stock, is excluded from ex-emption, the treasury hold. associations acting as sales agenta for farmers, fruit grow-ers, live-stoc- growers, dairymen and others, or engaged in marketing farm products and turning back to pro-ducer the proceeds of sales, less oper ating expenses, are exempt from tax, Hartson ruled. The decision said that maintenance of a reasonable reserve for deprecia-tion or losses of reserves required by state statutes, reasonable surplus to provide for erection of buildings or purchase 'of other facilities, or to re-tire Indebtedness incurred to meet Im-provements, doe not destroy exemp-tion. In case stock Is owned In associations by persons other than producers, satisfactory explanation must be made In th application for exemption. Ownership of a share of stock by a to qualify him as an officer under statutory require-ment does not Invalidate an exemp-tion claim. The restriction Is not placed on stock Issued temporarily for the sol purpose of providing working capital or acquiring property, providing such stock Is not entitled to participate In profits of the control of the association. Under the same restrictions, associations acting aa purchas-ing agents for farmer are exempt from federal taxation |
