Show JJ SPECIAL TRAIN GOES OUT TO REPaiR WIRES Weather conditions today were improving im-proving all over the country. For the first time, perhaps, on any New Year's day, ther was no wiro trouble of any kind at the Western Union I office, which is the second greatest repeater station In America or the world. Wire Chief Levi W. Harris, whose genius keeps the telegraphic "nervous 1 system" of the entire West in good j working order, said every wire was working today in toptop order. "This 1 means weather conditions throughout the country," he said, "favorable to I the perfect working of the wires." I Wire Chief Harris and a crew of itwenty-fie linemen probably smashed the world's record for finding and I repairing wire breaks on December 26, j the morning after the great holiday. 1 The chief found 270 wire breaks in the (thirteen miles botween Corinne and Kelion, caused by sleet and freezing. The wires were actually broken in 270 places. From his place at the switchboard, Chief Harris located approximately the 270 breaks and then summoned the "trouble shooters." He also ordered or-dered out a special work train and in record time equipped It with a commissary, com-missary, sandwiches and hot coffee, and all the snow-shoes which could be found Arriving at the scene ot tho first break, the men began work with a vim about 10 a, m., and at 5 p. m. the wires were repaired and service was resumed. The following day a score of sleet breaks were found between Ogden and Evanston, but the 270 breaks in thirteen miles and the quick repairing established a record. The weather here today was bright and comfortable with tho mercury I around twenty degrees above zero For the last 48 hours It has averaged two or three degrees below freezing. 00 |
