Show COLLEGE ATHLETES TAKE FANCY TO THE I . AVIATION DEPARTMENT OF ARMY NEW YORK. July 14. Of tho long string" of tip-top college athletes who havo declared for the army it is curious curi-ous that a majority have taken a fancy fan-cy to the aviation department. The United States School of Aeronautics at Cornell university is now the great training ground for tho college flyers from tho leading seats of learning. In tho big squad of aerial navigators who hope to win distinction at the front there aro track and field men, oarsmen, footballers, baseball players, cross-country runners, swimmers, tennis ten-nis players and fencers. By far tho most notable and the closest student of the aircraft is James E. (Ted) Meredith, of Pennsylvania, the world's record holder for the quarter quar-ter and half mile. The Red and Blue is also represented by F. L. Koons, who was catcher on the varsity baseball base-ball nine, and he also played end on tho football team. The champion varsity var-sity wrestler, named W. E. Eaton, works with the flyers. Cornell .herself has furnished some clever candidates In T. R. Farnsworth and P. M. Fltzpatrick, of tho varsity crew and there is L. E. Wonz, who it will be remembered came in third in the intercollegiato cross-country championship last fall. Another promising "bhrdman" is W. Shelton, who figured prominently in the 440 yardB last year. The dark Blue of Yalo figures well among tho boys. There is S. J. Walker, of whom great things were expected over tho sticks, but he never II got a chance to show his real merit, and Brodlo, who will bo remembered as the all-western guard in football, IH and a former student or tho university of Chicago. H. Church, tho varsity end on tho football eleven, is an apt HH Btudont of tho aerial fleet A. Gibson, tho most versatile athlete from Columbia, is the only Blue and Whito representative. Ho Is a foot- iHJ bailer, swimmer, fencer and water Bl polo expert. Coo College has Stunk-ard, Stunk-ard, who has a record of 15 2-5 over the high hurdles. From Williams College there are Hubbell and Kempt of the swini'mlng team. Tho Lehigh candi- 'H date Is Jan Is, a gymnast, and Ala-bama Ala-bama Poly Tech has Battle, who has distinguished himself at football, lawn tennis and with the track team. ,M |
