Show TEUTONS STRIKE AT TIE1SSIMS Great Battle Is On and Austro-Germans Austro-Germans Are Attempting to Flank Enemy. Potrograd, Oct. 17, 12:45 p. m., via London, Oct. 18, 12:17 a. m.) The whole of General Brussiloff's front, from the district of Kovel to Rumania, Ru-mania, presents an almost continuous battle line, with arge Russian and Austro-Gennan forces constantly engaged en-gaged in attacks and counter-attacks, each side successfully defending its position, but making no lasting progress prog-ress against its opponent. It has become evident that the intention in-tention of breaking through tho northern north-ern sector of General Brussiloff's line and recapturing Lutsk has boon sup-plemented, sup-plemented, since Rumania's entry Into In-to tho war, by a more audacious plan a move at tho extreme southern flank by the Austro-Germans, in the hope of separating tho Russian armies from their new allies. Gain In Carpathians. To this end tho Austro-Germans have coucentratqd heavy forces at the southern tip of Bukowi'na. whoro the southern flank of tho Russians joins the northern flank of the Rumanians, and have begun an advance south of Dorna-Watra, accompanying this with a vigorous attack slightly farther north in the region of Korosmezo and Kirllbaba, and a parallel movement against the Rumanians In Transylvania. Transyl-vania. ThuB far the drivo of the Teutonic allies against tho Rumanians has been more successful than that against the Russians, for, while the former aro retiring toward thel rovm frontier, fron-tier, tho Russians have not as far a is known at present, been compelled to give way before the powerful of fenslve directed against them. The Austro-German movement, however, how-ever, is still in its early stages and a tremendous struggle is expected on this part bf the front. Already the Russians havo begun countef-maneu-vers, as Is attested by the number of prisoners taken In the KIrlibaba re-; glon, where the first attack of the Austro-Germans, in the view of military mili-tary observers, bears little semblance of success Fighting still continues southeast of Vladlmlr-Volynski, in Volhynia and south of Brzezany, in Gallcla. At these two points, covering respectively respective-ly the roads to Vladimlr-Volynski, and Lemberg, a continuous battle Is being carried on at close range, leading often oft-en to bayonet encounters, but without with-out producing any decisive results. nn |
