Show ISOLATION HOSPITAL IS NOW OPEN FOR PATIENTS Ogden now can claim the distinction of having the finest isolation tibspital for contagious diseases in this section of the west, thanks to the constancy of purposo of the county commissioners, commission-ers, who, after much effort, finally found and purchased for $2600 a tract of land sufficiently remote frnm dwell ings and otherwise ideally adapted, comprising 25 acres, on North Washington Wash-ington avenue and the street car line, about a mile from the city limits, with superb scenic surroundings and all requisite advantages. The building and grounds cost about $7000. All who have seen the hospital say it is ideal in design and satisfactory satisfac-tory in every respect. From the avenue, ave-nue, half a mile distant, the hospital looks like a farmer's beautiful home, set upon a knoll in the middle of a great rolling meadow, three-quarters of a mile from the mountains, Physician Draws Plans. The commodious building of five or six rooms, including the two large wards, was constructed on cement foundations with a cement basement for the water and heating systems, brick and stucco walls, bungalow stylo finish, modeiu throughout, has just been finisJicd by Contractor Conrad C. Edvalstn under the supervision of Architects Shreove and Madsen, who designed the building from plans drawn by Dr. Alfred A. Robinson, the county physician and chairman of the health board. The hospital and grounds were inspected in-spected today by Commissioners Wil-I Wil-I liam C. Hunter, Moroni Skeen, Dr. Robinson and a Standard reporter. The land carries a good water right, and the ninety-foot pressure from tho canal is sufficient for the Irrigation of the laigo garden and the blue-grass lavns, -which are to be developed. By dint of diplomatic effort the commissioners commis-sioners obtained a right of way for a road to the place from Washington avenue, which is to be bordered with trees. Arbors will be constructed as tho grounds are developed and the natural beauty of the place will bo enhanced en-hanced by thf planting of flowers and ornamental shrubbery, requiring small expense. To Be Self-Supporting. Some of the land is very fertile and it is the intention of the commissioners commission-ers to make the crops pay for the maintenance of ttie hospital and the property. The average observer, when asked to name a reasonable value for the property, usually suggests $10,000, for the grounds are adapted for intensive in-tensive dcvolopmont and the building is uncommonly attractive. "It was our aim from the start," said Commissioner Hunter, "to make the property pay for Itself." The hospital has, at one corner of the building, a flowing well 235 feet deep, connected with the automatic water system, equipped with a largo tank in the basement The water pressure operates the system automatically, automat-ically, keeping the entire building supplied sup-plied with fresh water and adequate fire prottction. The basement coal fiirnace supplies head to every room and the temperature tempera-ture can bo regulated as needed. The sewerage syBtom is regarded as perfect, per-fect, being thoroughly sanitary. A septic tank is used. Everything Convenient. The fumigating room, easily accessible acces-sible from any part of the hospital, is so constructed that the odors cannot escape except through alrshaft and ventilator abovn the roof. One of the wards will accommodate eight patients without crowding and the other six or seven. The wards are separated by a wide hall, so that different dif-ferent diseases such as smallpox and measles can bo isolated from each other. The nurse's room is handily located hospital without carrying contagion from one ward to the other. The long hall is equipped with built-in built-in linen closets and the kitchen Is provided with every needed convenience. conveni-ence. The building will be comfortably furnished throughout. The floors will be oiled, for carpets are not considered desirable In a hospital. Tho construction materials and design de-sign of the building assurp coolness in summer and warmth in winter. Concealment Unnecessary. Dr. Robinson said that with such a desirable isolation hospital, assuring the best of care and protection, no one hereafter will have a reasonable oxcuse for hiding a case of smallpox or other contagious disease. Heretofore the commissioners have had no place fit for the isolation of patients and suffering sometimes resulted. re-sulted. As a duty to humanity and for the protection of the city, thoy spared no effort to find and develop a suitable place. Thero are no patients for the hoHpi-ta.1 hoHpi-ta.1 at the present time and there will probably never be more than four or five at a time for years to come. The hospital will be adequate to all needs for two decades, perhaps, and when Ogden attains metropolitan proportions, propor-tions, Mr. Hunter said, additions easily eas-ily may bo constructed. |
