Reinforced by a new third sacker, Schultz of Pittsburg, Los Angeles received a severe licking at the hands of Portland Port-land today In the opening game- of the ten-game series. Standrldge and Scogglns made a poor pair to sick onto on-to the Beavers. Standridge walked seven men, hit another and allowed a flock of hits In less than six Innings, and Scoggins was not much of an improvement The Mackmen scored over half of their total off the southpaw, south-paw, and save for a couple of circus catches by Rube Ellis in left, two or three more tallies would have trickled over. Chuck Ward at short for Portland was the other fielding star of the day. Kelly pitched for Portland and the Angels dented him for but one run up to the ninth. In the ninth Maggert walked and sole second and third and scored on Wolter's double to center. The Angelic registration came In the sixth on McLar.ry's double, Stand-ridge's Stand-ridge's single and a sacrifice fly by 'Maggert. "With the score 0 to 0 In the flth, the Beavers bombarded Standridge Stand-ridge for four Its, good for three runs, and In the seventh they opened up on Scoggins for four runs. With the bases full, Wllle led to center, scoring Ward and Kelly. Southworth singled, scoring Evans. Wllle then scored when Boles made a wild throw to first. In the fifth inning three tallies were made when Rodgers doubled, scoring Wllle, and Howard scored when Woltcr threw wild to second. sec-ond. William then singled to right, scoring Rodgers.
