Show no Washington, Oct. 6. Senator William Wil-liam E. Borah of Idaho, who has concluded con-cluded a three days' speaking tour of West Virginia, having spoken at Fairmont, Fair-mont, Morgantown and Wheeling, said today: "I do not know of any other place in the country where former Progressives Progres-sives are so universally and so thoroughly thor-oughly in line for the Republican ticket this year as they are In West Virginia. With tho complete amalgamation amal-gamation of Republicans and Progressives Progres-sives which there Is in West Virginia, I do not see how it Is possible for the Democrats to carry the state. "Wherever I have been In this year's campaign I have found that Republicans do not believe that the industrial situation which is bound to develop after the war closes has been taken care of or that it will be taken care of if the Democrats remain in power. This Is the universal, all-pervading all-pervading issue. Groups of Republicans Republi-cans may talk more about the Mexican Mexi-can situation or the eight-hour law or some other issue, but the one universal uni-versal issue that the people are talking talk-ing about everywhere Is expressed in the query: 'What will happen to the country if the Democrats remain in power until the war closes?' There is universal distrust of Democratic policies as a means of protecting the country aaglnst an Industrial situation which would cause more distress than war." nn |
