Show PATIENCE FOUMD EM TOOL BOX , A) ENRY owned a tool box for jSf the nrst tlr"e In his life. and he was eager to make something useful, and did j not want to practlco on something ornamental, as x- J his mother suggested would S bo tne w,ser Plan. So he set to work to mako a llttlo stool, that his grandmother could rest her feet upon when sho cr.t In tho rocking chair. First, he bought cherry wood, or so It was called, with somo money of his own. as ho wanted it to be all his own gift. Then he mado a plan of a stool, and also a picture of it. According to tho plan it would havo a top, four legs, four crosspieces and a little bit of decora-t'on decora-t'on at each corner. Tie sawed and planed it and measured and Joined tho pieces, and altogether mado a very scientific Job of it. but it wobbled and did not conform to the plan at all. Then h6 took It all apart, very patiently, and remade It, and, finally, after three trials, ho had a very good looking piece of furniture. ' His mother was moro pleased because of tho patlenco Henry showed in making over the stool than she was in the ilnal production. "I want to tell you a stoiy that has a bearing bear-ing on the subject, Hatuy,' she said. "Your grandfather and his brother once bought some land and your grandfather thought there wore signs of a very important mlnoral to be found In it. Thoy were both Interested In chemistry and began o mrke experiments. I'ccause they wero not near enough to a scientific scien-tific laboratory .e havo the matter decided. 'Your great-uncle worked all day over tho analysis, and then gave it up. but your grandfather grand-father would not do so. His brother sold his land at an advance on hiff paying price, but your grandfather would not do it. He worked fur a week, and then, finally, became so certain cer-tain that he was right anout the mineral that is wei t to New York and had an analysis of the ore mado and becamo a rich man, becauso of tho deposit. "That is the reason that I should llko to have you careful and painstaking about everything every-thing yoi attempt to do. You may not always make money by It, but you will strengthen your own il.aracter. Remember, that if a tiling is worth dcing at all it Is worth doing well, and If you d ) not consider it worth doing well, don't waste time with it at all." It would be interesting to know how many articles Henry worked over for the next six months but besides the stool he did not finish but two other pieces, ono a waste basket for his mother and the other a handkerchief box for his sister. They wore perfect in every respect. When he was satisfied with them ho began to make a plan for a cedar wood box for his mother to keep tho blankets and woolen clothes in during the summer. He found a great deal of trouble in getting cedar wood, with the amount of money he had. and as yet he has not succeeded. Moreover, ho will have to have strong brass clamps for tho box and will find it. perhaps, more of a job than he can accomplish with his limited knowledge knowl-edge of carpenter work. But he has been taking lessons at school and has visited cabinet shops and carpentor shop;,, and is quick to observe and remember, and realizes that it Is a big Job that ho has on hand, but he Is bound to succeed, and hla , mother Is sure that ho will, even If ho 1b a long time doing It. Henry had all sorts of things to contend with in his first efforts, becauso ho found his tool? too Hmall for practical use, and had to replace many of thcm.wlth bigger tools, and that meant saving money to buy them. "I have given up candy and soda and all things of that kind," ho told his aunt, "and am Baving all my money for tools." He sold a replica of each of the three things . that he mado and added to his money, and is on tho way to becoming an expert in his lino of work. But. ono of tho most Interesting things that Henry ha-s done Is to orgaulzo a carpontors" club and tho boys meet and exchange plans and talk about their work. Very few of them aro -as painstaking as Henry, and so ho Is tho president of the club and hl3 work is a model for them alL |
