Show 00 WILSON ADHERES TO OLDSTATUS President Still Insists Woman Suffrage Is Question for States to Settle. Washington, Aug. 2. President Wilson Wil-son has not changed IiIb position that the woman suffrage question should be dealt with by the states, it was announced today at the White House. The statement was brought forth by the announcement yesterday by Charles E. Hughes, the Republican nominee, that ho favored an amendment amend-ment to the federal constitution giving the vote to women. A delegation of suffragists saw the president yesterday and afterward Indicated In-dicated they believed he would make a new statement on the question before be-fore the convention of the National Woman "Suffrage association in September. Sep-tember. A that time the policy to be pursued in the presidential campaign will be determined by the National Suffrage association. Secretary Tumulty discussed the question with the president and after-wards after-wards announced Mr. Wilson's position posi-tion on the subject was unchanged. This position, as outlined several times to suffrage delegations within the last three years, was, that while he favors votes for women, he is opposed op-posed to federal action. The president voted for woman suffrage suf-frage in New Jersey last year. It was indicated that todays action was final. . |
