Show NO CHINESE WALL FOR THE UNITED STATES. There are papers which declare that, after the European war, a trade war will be in sight, and they advocate the building of a high tariff wall to keep out the goods of other nations. The people of the United States cannot can-not isolate themselves by constructing barriers to freedom of trade and at the same time hope to continue to reach out for the commerce of the world. If this country has any thought of continuing to play an important part In foreign trade, It must meet the world'B competition, which makes for alertness, Ingenuity, economy and efficiency. ef-ficiency. For years our manufacturers, in many lines, have been underselling all competitors. From an insignificant export ex-port business, the United States has gained first place. There has been no nook or corner of the globe where American goods havo failed to gain entrance at prices low enough to meet the demands of the bargain hunter. It would be a national calamity, if this great country suddenly should quail before a seven-horned devil of political politi-cal creation and, with fenr and trembling, seek security behind a' Chinese wall. |
