Show IN THE SEASON OF POISON IVY. Poison ivy Is to be found In our canyons and at this time of year and early In the fall cases of poisoning may be expected. The government has Issued a number of remedies, including in-cluding washing with warm water and strongly alkaline soap immediately after the first symptoms. There is no one remedy that will cure all cases of Ivy poisoning, and In severe cases a physician should be con. suited. Specialists of the agricultural department have found tho following methods and formulas useful in many cases: i At the outset, the removal of the cause of the irritation may be accomplished ac-complished by cleansing the Inflamed surface repeatedly with alcohol, or with a saturated solution of sugar of lead In alcohol, using a fresh bit of lint or absorbent cotton each time, to avoid spreading the irritant. The su. gar of lead solution cannot be used over extensive areas, because of risk of lead poisoning. Covering the inflamed in-flamed parts with lint or absorbent cotton kept constantly moist with limewater or with a saturated solution of bicarbonate of soda will afford relief. re-lief. When this cannot be UBed, a simple ointment, such as zlno oxide ointment, is recommended. A solution containing l ounce of fluid extract of grindella to l pint of water applied on cloths and allowed to evaporate may afford relief. Black wash, prepared by adding l dram of calomel to r pint of lime-water, lime-water, may be applied two or three times a day, allowed to dry, and followed fol-lowed by zinc-oxide ointment. This treatment must bo used with caution in extensive cases because of the possibility pos-sibility of mercury poisoning. The acute inflammation of ivy pois. oning is sometimes followed by eczema and secondary infections of tho skin, which, in mild cases, will yeild readily to treatment with 'bland antiseptic ointments. A formula highly recommended for ivy poisoning and often especially helpful at this stage Jb the following: follow-ing: Carbolic acid, 2 grams; resorcln, 2 grams; bismuth subgallate, 4 grams; equal parts water and limewater to make 250 c. c. This solution may bo dabbed on the affected parts several times a day. |
