Show TAX ASSOCIATION FORMED IN IDAHO Boise, Idaho, Dec. 27. A movement was inaugurated here today 'for the creation of a state tax association, when tax experts and men of prominence promin-ence Interested in taxation problems gathered in the house of representa-tives representa-tives to discuss taxation. A temporary tempor-ary organization was perfected. Sen ator -lerome J Day of Moscow was elected chairman and Howard T Lewis, Lew-is, dean of the department of economics econom-ics of the "University of Idaho Aas chosen secretary- In explaining the object of the organization, or-ganization, Dean Lewis declared to the 100 delegates assembled that the part the university played in bring ing the tax experts together was not with any ulterior motive, but for the purpose of acorn phshing as much good as possible in endeavoring to bring about a solution of the tax muddle and high taxes in Idaho. He served notice no-tice that the injection of politics into the organization would Immediately result In the university's withdrawal. Four problems, he declared, confronted con-fronted the experts aud taxpayers' First, what are the facts9 second, the presentation of the facts to the people; peo-ple; third, to ascertain what the state is going to do, fourth, the collection of the taxation money Drew W Standrod. former member of the state tax commission, read a paper in which he called attention to the fact that people have confused state and county taxes, that the state tax is but a small percentage of the total taxes collected; that Bannock county alone Is raising in total taxps half as much as is required by the state, and that the taxes raised In that county now are twice as much as the total state tax fifteen years ago. Dr. E O Sisson, commissioner of education, discussed taxes from the school standpoint, and at the session tonight J. A Purtill of Mountain Home ' spoke on "The Weakness in the Present Pres-ent Tax Laws of Idaho." J |
