OLD-TIE ONE The people of the Fifth ward gathered gather-ed in largo numbers yesterday morning morn-ing at 11 o'clock in the -ward meeting house, to partake of the spirit of a Thanksgiving service -which had "been arranged under the direction of Bishop Bish-op James W. Ure and, at the conclusion conclu-sion of the meeting, the general opinion opin-ion expressed -was that it had served to impress evcryono present -with the real purpose of tho national holiday. The meeting -was planned by Bishop Uro as a reversion to an old order of the Mormon church, "which "was to hold a Thanksgiving Day service in tho different -wards, and marked the inauguration of similar services as annual events in the Fifth -ward, in future years. Elder Heber Sco-wcroft -was tho principal speaker at tho mooting and prayers wero offered by Patriarch George W. Larkln and Elder Thomas A. Shreovo. Special music was furnished furn-ished by a malo kuartette composed of Jed Ballantyne, Douglas Brian, Leo Madsen and "Walter Shephens and their several selections proved a rare treat. In his address, Elder Scowcroft reviewed re-viewed the story of tho first "Thanksgiving "Thanks-giving Day" in America, bringing clearly before his hearers the conditions condi-tions which had caused the "Puritan" colonists to feel that, ono day a year, at least, should bo devoted to raising their voices In praiso and thanksgiving thanksgiv-ing to tho Supreme Being who had showered blessings of peace and plenty plen-ty upon them. Continuing, the speaker told of the ideas of a number of the great American Ameri-can writers concerning Thanksgiving Day and tho spirit and manner in which it should bo observed. In conclusion, con-clusion, Elder Scowcroft mentioned many things which the peoplo of America In general and in tho communities com-munities of Utah and the west in particular par-ticular could well give thanks to God for possessing and exhorted his congregation con-gregation to at all times appreciate the blessings that aro theirs. oo |
