Show I GUNBOAT SMITH LOSES TO COFFEY Hi New York, Nov. 29. Jim'Coffey, by M knocking out Gunboat Smith in the M fourth round of their fight at Madison 1 Square Garden tonight, has gained F the right to meet Frank Moran again j for the privilege of meeting Jess Wil- H: ard for the championship of the H world. Coffey's victory was so con- i elusive that ho has again established H himself as a worthy opponent for Jess H Willard. B The knockout blow was a vicious l right swing, landed just below the j gunner's left ear. He fell to the floor ' as if hit with a club and Referee I Roche counted ten beforo tho dazed fighter could scramble to his knees. He then grasped tho ropes and gazed pitcously at his seconds in his corner. Coffey was on to him like a hawk aud was ready to swing what would possibly have beeu a fatal blow, but was pushed aside by Referee Roche and walked to his corner. Coffey's seconds then Jumped into the ring and hugged tho fighter whilo tho crowd yelled. It was as clean a knockout as could be wished for by tho most eager spectator. Tho first round was tamo, both fighters leaning on ono another, not more than ono or two blows being exchanged. ex-changed. Coffey was cool and collected col-lected in the second round and the gunner seemed to havo the best of it, nlthough no damaging blows were landed. The third round was all information. in-formation. Coffe who apparently had gained confidence by the previous previ-ous rounds, went at Smith liko a whirlwind. Tho loser was weakened in tho third by several vicious lefts to tho body. Tho firat preliminary was between Willie Astry and Johnny Russell. Russell Rus-sell had the bettor of it. Two heavyweights, Jack Driscoll of Brooklyn and Bill McKinnon of Boa-ton, Boa-ton, fought a draw in the semi-final. |
