March 9 Frank C Dailey, I'nited States district at- torney in Ms opening statement today to-day at thp trial of Don M RobprtH, mayor of Torre Haute and the twenty-seven twenty-seven others charged with conspiracy io corrupt the election of November 8, 1914, in Terre Haute, told how the Rovemment contends false registra t!ons were made, of alleged slugging and roug'i work at the polls and of the manner of collecting, and the j amount of tbn so-called ' .slush fund " and discussed the government's right to interfere in the election Mayor Roberts the government's Counsel asserted, called a meeting of his ' hand picked election inspectors, " and told them "that no one had a right to tench the voting machines except tho inspectors and that when a man entered for voting the inspect ors should do the work Juggled With Voting Machines. Roberts also demonstrated on a vot ing machine th manner in which a vote would noi be registered and often times. Mr. Dailey said, thp inspectors in-spectors would pull down the Democratic Demo-cratic lever, forcing the voter to vote that ticket If the voter protested vigorously the inspector would permit hlra to vote again, thus pairing the votes and leaving hoih uncounted, according ac-cording to the lawyer. 'The Roberts inspectors." Mr Dailey asserted, "always stood in a position to ste how a person voted and If the voter voted right' communicated commu-nicated with the man on the outside who handled the money. ' Methods of Repeaters. As an example of the methods used by repeaters, Mr Dailey gave the following: fol-lowing: "One busy repeater was a one-legged one-legged negro, who voted eight times in one precinct One time he came with a peg leg, another timp he wore a cork leg; the third time without with-out anything strapped to his leg; the fourth time an iron extension log; nnother time with one crutch and one time for the purpose of deception, he wore glasses.'" |
