Show DETECTIVES HUE ON QUIET HUNT FOR BLMH10EHS Today there Is a decided relaxation of interest In the blackhaad affairs The bandits may renew operations In the lull but it is the opinion of the officers that the men arc likely to wait until the events of the past ten days shall be less vividly recalled Whatever their attitude, the officers say they are prepared to cope with the situation and that there will be no let-up In their efforts to get the men From the fact that rwwards are being be-ing offered for their capture and that detectives In great numbers are working on the cas In connection with the fact that the entire popula tlon is looking for suspicious characters, charac-ters, in the Judgment of officers and detectives may cause the blackmailers to feel Insecure In their positions, and they will hardly dare to come out with further threats. Today Ib the quietest day in official circles since the battle of Sunday morning, mor-ning, no arrests having been made Edwards' Condition. Reports from the Dee hospital this afternoon were to the effect that David Da-vid Edwards, who was shot by the bandits on West Seventeenth street Sunday morning, is much improved He is stronger and his pulse Is steady The members of the Ecclcs familj he.e received no intimation ot further fur-ther threats against them and they are of the opinion that they may have a short respite The sheriff and chief of police say, however, that the storm may come again at an unexpected moment, mo-ment, and all the forces of the two departments be brought Into action igilance is the word with them and no step will be avoided to follow up Information which may lead to a tangible clue The offer of $2000 reward by the city and county, the officers sa,, should have a good effect and will no doubt cause many of those who are In a position to do so to begin a still hunt In addition to the rewards re-wards offered by the county and city commissioners, It is stated to be a certainty that at least a reward of $6000 more will be offered by citizens It is also said that prominent citizens of Ogdon and Salt Lake are Importuning Impor-tuning Governor William Spry to post a reward of at least $5000. Chlpf of Police W I Norton ha9 communicated with the officials of the Southern Pacific and the Oregon Short Line as to whether the rewards of $2500 each offered for the apprehension appre-hension of the men who robbed their trains at Reese and Flvo Points in 1910 are siill In force With the re wards already offered and those in contemplation, there will be a sum amounting to about $17,500 for the capture of the bandits This will furnish sufficient Inducement, detec tlves say. to get some of the shrewd est men in the business to take up the work The arrest of Detective Cox yesterday yester-day brought a realization on the part of all the officers and detectives on the Job that those who are following dues will do well to advise Chief Norton Nor-ton and Sheriff DeVlno of their pre6 ence and Identity, as to do otherwise ma lead to confusion and may be the means of unintentional bloodshed One of the detectives stated that morning at the sheriff's office that he consld ered it proper for the sheriff and the chief of police to act as a board of examiners on all detectives as to their fitness for the work and the source from which they have been detailed as sleuths This, he said, would avoid confusion and make the work at hand much more effectual On the other hand, several of the detectives do not care to be known even by the local officers as they desire to avoid the possibility of their quiet hunts being Interfered with Some of them are also working on the theory that the trailing may lead In a direction that will cause a big sensation in tho community com-munity when finally disclosed. "Whereas, Certain cltlsena of Ogden Og-den City, Utah, have during the past vear received threatening letters demanding de-manding that sums of money be paid to parties unknown, and Whereas, On the night of November Novem-ber 2nd. 1913. after the receipt of said threatening letters, the home of ouc of Ogden's citizens was dynamited, dynamit-ed, and "Whereas, Since said date other citizens of Ogden have received . threatening, blackmailing letters demanding de-manding money, and stating that in the event sa'd money was not paid that personal vengeance would be taken tak-en upon tho citizens to whom said letters were addressed, and "Whereas, The detective employed to capture the writer of said blackmailing black-mailing letters was on the morning of November 9th, 1913, seriously-wounded, seriously-wounded, "Now Therefore Be It Resolved. By the Board of Commissioners of Ogden Og-den that Ogden City offer and does heroby offer a reward of $1000.00 to the person or persons furnishing Such Information as will lead to the arrest ar-rest and conviction of the person or persons "ho on the night of November Novem-ber 2nd, 1913, dynamited the home of LeRoy Eccles, or who on the morning of November 9th, assaulted and wounded the detective, David Edwards (Signed l A G. "Whereas, The citizens of Ogden City and Weber county have for months passed been terrorized by the receipt of letters by many of our prominent cltirens demanding certain cer-tain sums of money and threatening engence upon persons and property of said parties If they failed to comply com-ply with said demand, and ' Whereas. The widow and sons of the late David Eccles have received such letters and falling to comply with the demands thereof, the residence resi-dence of LeRo Eccles was, on the night of Saturday November 1, damaged dam-aged by the placing thereon and exploding ex-ploding of dynamite or other high explosives; and Whereas, The said LeRoy Eccles has continued to receive letters of a blackmailing character and did on Saturday, November S, receive communications com-munications which attempted to extort ex-tort from him the sum of $1000 and from Ralph E Bristol the sum of $500, and "Whereas, In an effort to capture said bandits. Detective David Ed- wards was ambushed and shot thereby there-by sustaining serious wounds. Now Therefore, Be It Resolved, By the Board of County Commissioners Commission-ers of Weber county In the State of Utah, that the sum of $1000 be. and the same Is hereby, appropriated out of the general fund of Weber county and offered as a reward for the capture or for information that would lead to the capture and conviction con-viction of said peraon or persons who did on the night of Saturday, November 1, or the early morning of Sunday, November 2, i&13, place dynamite or other destructive explosives ex-plosives on or around the residence of LeRoy Eccles and caused the same to be exploded thereby damaging damag-ing said residence or the person or persons who shot at and seriously wounded Detective David Edwards on West 17th Street on the night of Saturday.
