I Throughout all parts of the Unit-j Unit-j erl States the cry has gone up that j I he schools of the country are not serving the needs of the children, J that the money spent for educational purposes is being wasted in efforts in the wrong direction, and that more I industrial training for boys and girls is the need While this subject is being taken j up and agitated on the platform and 1 in publications, the heads of the different dif-ferent schools of Ogden have been studying the matter and are putting into operation many of the sys'ems advocated, with the result that the schools are catering to a wider class of students and that the students are being given a practical work that they can begin to U6e Immediately upon leaving the institutions they are attending at-tending This practical work is not only given giv-en In the secondary schools, but begins be-gins in the kindergarten and goes to the high school. Two lines of trainiiiK in the gram mar grades promise, in addition to developing the practical instincts of the Btudenie. to result profitably as j well school gardening and poultry raising Because of the enthusiasm ! developed, both these lines promise to be successful. fiie planting of school gardens hat ' been agtUled for several months, and 1 through the efforts of the Civic league of OKden and the Publicity bureau. backed by the generosity of property : owners v. ho have turped over plot 3 i of ground for the students' use. the work has begun Interest in the raising of poultry by pupils attending school was aroused in a measure by the efforts of Prof M. J Abbey of the University of Utah Industrial extension bureau Now a number of boys and girls are caring car-ing for individual pens of chickens The board of education of Ogden has been willing to encourage this movement, and at the suggestion of a principal of a local school purchased an incubator for that institution. The incubator is a large one and will mean the raising of a number of chickens at that school alone At the same time the Interest of the hoys and girls has b-'en aroused more thoroughly thor-oughly and the subject has appealed to them In a new light. The poultry raising and gardening will be done under the supervision of experts on the pay roll. In order that up to date methods may be followed With competent instruction, Ihere appears ap-pears no reason to doubt that the work will develop Ideas in the pupils' and at the same time result profitably. profit-ably. At the high school and the Weber academy much attention lias been given giv-en to the manual training departments depart-ments for the boys and the domestic domes-tic arts department for the girls. Exhibitions Ex-hibitions of the vork done by pupils in both departments has demonstrated demonstrat-ed the success of the movement. At the high school large rooms in i the basement are given over to the I manual training department In ad- dition to a number of work tables with a complete assortment of hand tools, there is an electric wood working work-ing machine capable of doing the ' work of a similar machine iu any shop This department is one of the most popular In the school and Is con- ducted without great cost The boys pay for the material used and in turn own the article constructed during I the class periods. So Interesting la the work that there i6 never an afternoon aft-ernoon after school hours when there are not students at work The work taught is of such a practical prac-tical nature that the boys, upon completing com-pleting the course, are able to go to, work as tradesmeu and read blue-i prints with the most practical of carpenters. car-penters. The domestic arts department is divided di-vided into the cooking and dressmaking dressmak-ing divisions. The girls are instructed in the practical prac-tical and theoretical side of preparing and serving foods and are taught economy in I he preparation. in the sewing department practical work of this nature is done. All who hive attended exhibitions of work done by tho students of the W eher academy arc acquainted with the excellent articles turned out. In the domestic science department, it 1? the purpose of the Instructor to teach the oung ladies the art of preparing nourishing meals and at the same time not exceed a reasonable reason-able cost With that idea In view, monthly luncheons are held when a group of the students are givpn a certain amount of mone with which to prepare a certain menu and each group strives to surpass the other In marketing, preparing and eening. That the young ladies are able to serve most tempting and nourishing luncheons without exceeding the appropriation ap-propriation Is the declaration of all who have eer had the good fortune to sit at one of their tables Agricultural work has also been In. troduced and has been received with enthusiasm The work taught is ex-tiemeh ex-tiemeh practical and field trips haso been taken when the members of the classes have demonstrated their ability abil-ity as student farmers. At the State Industrial school, practical prac-tical work Is a feature and has been the means of saving many of the boys and girls who otherwise would have, j drifted along without a trade At the state school for the Deaf j and the Blind, practical work is also followed Dairying has come In fpr j Us aare of Interest and the school I boasts of one or tho line&t herds of I dairy cattle in the state Through the Bl forts of the hoard of trustees, the leg'slature has appropriated $6000 for the purpose of building a model dair-farm dair-farm wher the work can be carried on to a greater extent.
