Show LEASE MADE BY C S CHAPMAN OF FOREST RESERVE SERVICE means the employment of a large force of clerks and warehouse men after a careful comparison of points in the west and especially in utah ogden has been selected by C S chapman chief of the branch forest operations in the united states as headquarters and distributing center for branch stations scattered from the indian territory to the coast mr chapman has secured a ten year lease on the sammons warehouse on wall avenue which will bo ready for occupancy april 1 As 95 per cent of the forestry service is west of the missouri river most of the business that will be done through ogden will concern the western country but whenever it is necessary supplies wll be sent to the far cast and south in order to properly care for the main warehouse the services of 30 clerks and warehouse men will be required the monthly payroll out of ogden will amount to several thousand dollars and it is the intention of chief chapman to patronize as much as possible local merchants in the selection of barbed wire telephone material tools instruments stationery and sundry other supplies used in the forestry service heretofore washington D C has been the headquarters for all the branch forest operations but the distance of the main warehouse from the reserves made it impossible to ship supplies sooner than a week or two after the order had been placed to any part of the west from ogden all the territory covered by the forestry system can be reached in two or three days an advantage that appealed strongly to chief chapman and hastened his decision in favor of this city so favorably was he impressed with the city as regards its offerings as a place of residence and its important geographical situation that he stated before he left for the east that he would recommend the removal of a division engineers office here with part of his own clerical force it was through the instrumentality of the weber club that ogden was given preference over all other cities in utah during the dry farming congress mr chapman explained to secretary reynolds his object in visiting the city so when ho arrived ho was taken to the warehouse district i and shown the railroad facilities piloted through the residence districts and shown what the city has done to beautify the valley and when the trip was ended ho was so impressed that he declared he would write his decision as soon as ho returned to washington yesterday however ho returned in person asked permission to visit the sammons warehouse and in company with mr reynolds closed the deal for the lease on the structure the warehouse wath a reputation of being the best equipped of any in the west ho considered as excellently adapted for the purpose of housing large stocks of materials its proximity t the railroads makes it possible to handle freight from its platform at a minimum expense besides the branch houses al ready in commission others arc being constructed so that in a number qt years irwill be necessary to increase tho force and accommodations in ogden for at least ton years ane headquarters of the branch operations will be situated here and the entire government reserve stations will be supplied with goods through the local warehouse |
