Show C P M lp IP aca S S r N i ju r u u A n IP i n ti if A h 8 B I 1 BL m w CAR PORTERS COMPLAIN OF LONESOME only seven freight crews running west shop men have hours of work reduced f the freight traffic on both the union pacific and southern pacific railroads has apparently reached its lowest stage and less trains are needed to handle the business than for several years less thana dozen freight crews keep things moving and the track clear between ogden and grecu river and only seven freight crews aie at work today between this city and montello such a condition has not been experienced on cither of these roads for many years and it is believed a radical change will occur within the next thirty days in order to keep merchants 0 the ast supplied with staple and necessary goods A similar condition confronts railroads north and south and tram service has been reduced to a force just sufficient to handle the light business ahe working force at lakeside has also been reduced to such an extent that only five train crews are now given employment there and it is not believed this number will be increased until business shows a marked lm in every direction the engineering staff on the several lines are engaged in mapping out new and necessary work but none of this will be taken up actively and carried out until orders are received from general headquarters while no passenger trains havo yet been taken off on any of the harriman roads centering at ogden travel in all directions remains light and on many of tho transcontinental tin trains almost every passenger has a special car by himself two or three passengers occupy standard pullman cars while tourist sleepers accommodate even less As one of the car porters said this morning wo dont have people enough on the road at this time to give us necessary ex arcise and wo are actually lonesome and pining tor more and new faces ogden only put in four hours today on account of the scarcity of work and this reduction will probably occur every saturday in the future for the next sixty days or until business anthe roads shows a marked increase in this connection it is evident that ogden Is a favored point with operating officials of tho harriman roads inasmuch as but few of the men laid off at pocatello salt lake sparks winnemucca cariln and monteiro Monte IIo have been put to work again while practically all of the regular force have resumed work in this city notwithstanding dull times on all tho lines centering here J F kammel who has been pullman agent at ogden for some time has been promoted to the position of superintendent of a district with headquarters at denver and leaves to accept the new position early next week |
