Show mm pi mae wood unable to fiet bail is locked up in he tombs new york may 21 mao C wood whose suit for an absolute divorce from united states senator thomas C piatt of new york has been on trial in the supreme court here for several days was committed to the tombs prison late today after justice ogorman had dismissed the complaint in her action and ordered her held in ball on a charge of pei jury the decision in senator platts favor and the sudden and sensational ending of the suit came after a day which tho defense occupied largely with the introduction of expert and other testimony attacking the authenticity of the documents by which the plaintiff was seeking to establish her alleged marriage to senator platt A handwriting expert testified that in his opinion the body of the letter in which senator platt was alleged to lave admitted his relation as husband to the plaintiff was added after the senators signature had been affixed more telling still for the defense were the deposition by engravers and stai called by counsel for senator platt that the blank form upon which the alleged plait wood marriage certificate was prepared was not litho graphed until three months after the date upon which the marriage of miss wood to senator platt was alleged to have taken place miss wood was recalled to the stand in rebuttal she wad asked if after hearing the test mony about the marriage certificate she still reiterated that the defendant gave her the certificate as she previously testified 1 I still reiterate it she replied justice ogorman turned to miss wood and pointedly questioned tier she repeated her assertion that the marriage occurred as she had stated she admitted that senator platt never her and when asked by the court f she did not consider it the duty of a husband to support his wife she replied 1 I do but as longas he was not enough of a gentleman to do so I 1 never asked him senator platts counsel then moved for a dismissal of the complaint it was forthwith granted by justice ogorman who in rendering his decision eald 1 I cannot credit the plaintiffs evidence as to the alleged marriage and the testimony as it impresses tho cobit 13 that this is a most wicked design to support a false and fictitious claim by forgery and perjury forthwith justice ogorman ordered miss wood committed to the tombs on the charge of perjury fixing her bail at she was obviously staggered by the sudden turn of affairs and the shock caused by the order of arrest which he court made she quickly regained her composure however and by the time she reached the city prison had resumed he air of confidence which sho held practically throughout the trial at the district attorneys office tonight 4 was said that miss woods case would speedily be presented to the grand jury and pressed for trial it an indictment was found at a lato hour miss wood had not beep able to furnish the ball demanded in her case and was hlll locked up in the tombs |
