| Show DAVID WEST FINED charles has first case in court for beating a woman david west was given the maximum fine in the police court this morning the complaining pla ining witness was only a woman of the street but that fact had no weight with judge murphy who considering the brutality of the offense thought the defendant should be made an example adarle hayes the complaining witness stated to the court that on the night of july 11 when she went to the defendants room to secure her clothing which she had left there the defendant grabbed her by tho throat threw her to the floor and while she was lying prostrate the defendant beat and kicked her she was borne out in her statements by two witnesses who had heard her scream and witnessed a portion of the affair on being recalled to the stand miss hayes said that tor fifteen hours after the affair she remained in hiding as she feared for he life on the stand in his own defense west admitted that he had slapped the woman but denied that he had punched or kicked her As an excuse for his conduct he claimed that he had great provocation and went into his relations with the woman at great length in assessing the fine the court said that he had no doubt but that a brutal assault had been committed and for that reason made a heavy fine in the caw of D A raleigh who was charged with cruelty to animals attorney charles made bi debut in the police court as an attorney he requested that as mr corey the complaining witness had discovered that he had acted hastily in the matter and wished to withdraw the charge the case be dismissed judge murphy would not make the order dismissing the case but ordered that the case be referred to city attorney bagley for investigation of the four violators of the bicycle ordinance and the three violators of the ordinance relating to the tying of teams abo were on the docket but one put in an appearance he was a bicycle rider and was fined the usual amount the others forfeited their ball two bags completed the docket they were advised to hit the trail under penalty ol 01 ninety days on the rock pile |
