Show mcclellan Is named for mayor of new york new boik oct 5 mayor george B mcclellan was tonight ted tor maor of new york city for the four year term beginning january ast 1st next by the democratic city convention of tammany hall organization mr mcclellan ia now rounding out his first term of two years the state habing recently amended the city charter so as to provide for tour years tenure of office for oell bials of greater new york the tammany convention was held ln carnegie hall amid much enthusiasm the fact that the entire ticket had been decided upon before hand did not seem to diminish the ador of the delegates of the five boroughs of fhe greater city they entered upon the work of ratifying with much earnestness mr mcclellan wai the only member of the present administration the ticket named by the convention being as follows mayor george B mcclellan of manhattan for comptroller herman A metz of brooklyn for president of the board of aldermen patrick F mcgowan of manhattan mr meiz is named to succeed comp E M grout and mr mcgowan to succeed president charles V fornes mr fornes presided at to nights convention A resolution was adopted highly commending president roosevelt for his services in bringing about peace between russia and japan leader charles F murphy of tammany hall received an uproarious welcome when he walked into the convention hall the band playing tammany and the de galtes wildly senator patrick H mcgowan the brooklyn leader also was accorded an ovation mayor mcclellan was notified of his nomination and appeared in the hall shortly after 11 again there was an enthusiastic demonstration mayor mcclelaan McClel tan in accepting the nomination declared it had come to him unasked and unsought he said he wa pledged to no man nor group of men pledged only to the people to do his duty to the best 0 his ability mr mcclellan spoke briefly but took occasion to touch upon the question of municipal ownership of public utilities As a democrat 1 he said 1 I believe that community is best governed which is least governed and that where individual and private enterprise can accomplish the same results as government government has no tight to interfere where however public utilities conducted by private enterprise fall in giving the people an adequate I 1 believe that it is the dub of government to take control the adopted touches on municipal ownership and declares it has long been accepted as a democratic doctrine public ownership it is asserted is no longer a campaign catchword but a principle applied and in operation in this the greatest of asrican cities an intelligent conservative and responsible democratic administration may be entrusted with the continued application and the ultimate triumph upon safe lines of the principle of municipal control of public utilities |
