Show WITH GRADUAL commencement exercises of taft I 1 M C I 1 held in gordon academy the hall was crowded with visitors gov vernor wells presented the diplomas the large hall in the gordon academy ans crowded to the utmost by the throng who attended the commencement exercises of the inter mountain collegiate exercises last evening and ei en the halls and entrances were converted temporarily into seating quarters the ball was tastily decorated with banting and flowers and from the long streamers that reached from wall to nail hung groups of chinese lanterns the graduates occupied places on the platform prot smith of the I 1 M 0 I 1 waa master of ceremonies the exercises were opened with a vocal selection come rise with the lark by mrs ulrich miss gardinier mr griffin and mr ware invocation by rev brandall Or andall followed and then came a selection from the maccabee mandolin club at this point president smith gave his address he commented on the ability of the graduating class and complimented the students etu dents on the progress made he said it had been his object to teach the students self reliance and closed recommending the graduates aa competent and trustworthy in the business field harof ole bjerkhoel assisted by mr hause accompanist gave a violin solo the class in stenography was put through a series of exercises by instructor anna L smith A number of letters were dictated and the class showed great aptitude and accuracy in taking notes old mother hubbard by the big four quartette was the nest number and it created such applause that the quartette of popular ladies had to appear the second time the encore was who built the ark president smith conducted an exercise in practical nig to illustrate the proficiency of the class the showing was a ery creditable one governor wells was heartily applauded when introduced by president J A smith he addressed the graduating class as follows it ia always a genuine pleasure to me to visit a school it reminds me of my own school days and brings back decol lection the happiest period of my life I 1 hope you all appreciate that this early portion of your fife is the most important you will ever see it is your golden opportunity As you plant now BO will you reap if you make the most of days you will not in after life be found sitting with your chin in your hand and a faraway look in your eyes as we see people crying oh days of my youth return in addressing you briefly at this time it seems it wound be in me to expect to be able to offer you any advice or instruction that has not already been given you by those who have made that their special business for so long that the great moral responsibility resting upon your instructors has been faithfully discharged I 1 have no doubt that the fruition of their untiring labors will be duly exemplified in those who have faithfully followed their instructions I 1 am equally sanguine I 1 can but express the hope that habits of cludy and thought during these college days have become go much a part of your nature that they will con tiace with you through life if you have EO formed your habits and pa laid your plans as to make ahe most of your endowments it your have prepared yourselves for active and decisive usefulness in life then success I 1 bad almost said eminence is all but assured you I 1 apprehend that none of you have imbibed the error of supposing that with the ot your college das the acquisition of knowledge ceases indeed it may then to have osy fairly begun the object of your college training has not been gp much to fill your minds with exhaustive stores of information as it has been to discipline them and fit them for future acquisitions and usefulness he who can learn nothing outside the schoolroom can learn but very little within it if you have so much as learned to know what you do not know much will have been accomplished for in this day ot w idely diffused and diver 1 aifred literature the discerning mind that can select the gold and avoid the dross will give to its possessor vastly superior advantages in life the diplomas you are about to receive you will not regard as proof sufficient that you have acquired the sum of all human wisdom but rather as the evidences of creditable diligence and arduous application of mind in the future if you would continue as you now are worthy of these diplomas you will find it necessary to assiduously apply your minds to the future acquisition of knowledge as well as to the retention of that already attained otherwise these diplomas will become the emblems of aliat you once were but no longer arc I 1 congratulate you my young friends that you leave eo conducted ia alila college aa to have earned and deserved the credit marks which are represented by these diplomas you are about to enter upon a broader sphere of action now the great uncertain battle of life and you are ambitious I 1 doubt not to succeed you have been taught to be honest and moral for these are the first great essentials but it is not enough to be simply good be good for something just as hard study has enabled you to bo proficient in your recitations so hard work will be the talisman that will open to you abo doors of achievement A well known business man several years ago arota in my autograph album a couplet which though perhaps lacking in elegance nevertheless expresses a truism which I 1 commend to you remember this nor wealth nor detato but rustling hard that makes men great after this speech the diplomas were presented and the mandolin club
