Show 01 demand better hours of labor better pay and recognition of the 0 R T president of the road on which the strike has been ordered says the movement is not general and will not interfere with regular train service leader of the strikers sets foran their grievances atlanta april 11 president W V powell ot the order 0 railway telegraphers grap hers ordered a strike of the telegraphers grap hers and other employed emp loyes ot the southern railway begin at 11 today the southern has about 1200 employed emp loyes ot this class in a statement which president powell has issued he said in accordance with the constitution of the order ot railway telegraphers I 1 hereby approve a strike on the lines ot the southern and alabama southern railways effective at 11 a m april 12 1900 all efforts to effect an amicable settlement ot the failed the strike Is now on six hundred and eighty five telegraphers and other station employed emp loyes voted in favor and against many nonunion non union members will stand by the order the strike was inaugurated augu rated tor the following purposes to secure reinstatement ot its members who were discharged by the southern railway for the right to be heard through committee in the adjustment of individual grievances tor a set of rules and rates of pay to govern train i dispatchers telegraph operators agents and other station employed emp loyes in their employment discipline etc twelve consecutive hours work per day where one or two telegraphers are employed including one consecutive hour for aln ner ten consecutive hours including meal hour in all relay dispatchers offices and offices where more than two telegraphers are employed eight consecutive hours tor train dispatchers pay for overtime to abolish the alce of compelling agents to load cotton i and the performance of other manual labor a minimum scale of 45 and 50 per month tor operators and 10 for dispatchers fair and equitable rules regarding promotion washington april 12 vice president and general manager gannon the southern railway made light the reported strike of telegraph operators on the southern at one p m he said there was no interruption 0 traffic and that so far as heard from only four operators quit chattanooga tenn april 12 according to officials ot the southern railroad no inconvenience to the road had yet resulted rom the strike twelve operators in this city went out but it is said their places have been filled |
