Show FOREIGN POTATOES DANGEROUS TO USE FOR SEED. Although home-grown seed potatoes pota-toes are selling at high prlcM, foreign-grown foreign-grown potatoes should not bo substituted substi-tuted for them. The following statement state-ment on the danger to the American potato crop from the uso of Imported seed potatoes has been Issued by the Secretary of Agriculture: Europo has several potato diseases not now known to exist In this country, coun-try, which, if introduced, might be the means of greatly reducing our annual ylold of potatoes. Should these diseases dis-eases become prevalent throughout the United States, the cost of producing pro-ducing future crops might be very greatly Increased. Do not, therefore, under any circumstances cir-cumstances use foreign-grown potatoes pota-toes for seed either at tho North or at tho South. Tho sorts which are coming to this country at tho present time are lato sorts and aro not adapted to planting in tho South, where early potatoes arc the main crop, neither aro they adapted to planting at the North, for they will not produce a satisfactory yield. They are not adapted to our soils or to our climate, and will not yield profitable crops; but the danger of Introducing diseases not now present Is sufficient reason for refusing to plant them. The Jersoy cow is a highly developed milk making machine. Sho has been bred so long for this purpose that her characteristics have become fixed, and the descendants of a well-bred dairy cow can be depended upon. Tho amount of milk that she will make depends largely on the .amount of food that you can get her to use. |
