Show M I NEW HOMESTEAD MEASURE. 1 ' H ;f The progress of the Borah three-year homestead bill in Con- H I 1 gress is being watched with much interest by those in Utah who H I ) contemplate making homestead entries. Hj 1 ' Ln a&reemenfc has been reached by the conference committee H ! I on the bill and the report will endorse the measure as it passed the H house, providing for a redemption of the time to complete homc- H r stead entry from five to three years, permitting an entryman to be H" - 1 absent for not more than five months in each year after establishing H a residence and allowing in case of sickness or climatic reasons, H twelve months from the date of filing in which to commence rcsi- H I dpnee. H ' I 'Tfle amendments agreed upon by the conference committee rc- H J quire cultivation on each homestead entry of one-sixteenth the sec- H j ond year of residence and one-eighth the third year. This cultiva- H K tion requirement will also apply to enlarged homesteads, thereby H I reducing the cultivated area one-half on homesteads of this class. H ' The secretary of interior, upon a showing of good faith by the H j entryman. may further reduce the area required for cultivation in individual cases. H The bill as agreed upon by tho committco it is expected will H have the support of the interior department and be approved by ! the president. H I There is a large acreage of dry farming land to the northwest H ' Ogden, along the Promontory range and further north to the H Idaho boundary, which is open to location and will be sought after with the passage of this new homestead bill. 1 Thousands of acres of uncultivated land, heretofore unattract- : ive to home builders because of the requirements of the homestead H ' 1 ( la' calling for five years. residence, will be quickly taken up. H ( Ogdenites, who think favorably of homesteading 320 acres of H dry farm land will be kept informed by the Standard on the Borah H bill and will be advised at the earliest moment possible of the M : enacting of the measure into law, so that they may be among the H first to avail themselves of the benefits of the new' legislation. |
