Show May Change Average System rpiiAT the present system of compiling compil-ing base running averages Is manifestly mani-festly unfair to tho weak hitter Is being be-ing agitated for the purpose of having it changed. The present system Is to strlko an average by dividing the number of games playod by the number of bases stolen, which, of course, gives a great advantage to tho good hitter who reaches first the most for first base must be reached before a baso can bo stolen. A man like Cobb, who makes 250 hits during a season, not to speak of the number of times ho walks and reaches his base by reason of errors, certainly has an advantage over a player who may bo a better base runner, but does not got to first as often. It Is argued that It would be much fairer to consider the number of times a man reaches first when trying to find his baso stealing average, for this would glvo tho weak hitter an equal chnnco with tho star sluggers. |
