Show ARE DRIVING PILES IN THEJLAKE Assistant Superintendent F. E. Eis-tou Eis-tou of the Southern Pacific returned today from a trip to Carlln on which he Inspected the polo line now in course of construction along the fill In the lake which will support the alternating al-ternating oloctrlc block system across tho water for a distance of IS mileu. Mr. Easton states that tho work la progressing satisfactorily and that li should be complete J by November 1. The poles are driven Into tho bed of the lake to a depth of 20 feet and are allowed to project above tho surface of tho water about 30 foot. The poles iro being placed In position 100 feet south of the trestle and about 150 feet apart throughout the IS miles. As the water Is from 10 to 20 feet deep along the course selected considerable con-siderable stability Is required of the poles. Mr. Easton states that tb Inyers of gypsum which underlie I . bed of tho lake are encountcrod at varying depths, tho long piles penetrating alternating al-ternating strata of silt, lake mud and gjpsum and socurlng therein a firm anchorage. About 50 men are now engaged In constructing tho line, but additional gnngs ure being organized which will more than double the force Mr Easton says that ho found Elko a lively place and that the farmers along tho Humboldt river are rejoicing rejoic-ing oor a bumper hay crop oo |
