Show (QUARREL OVER A BOARD BILL A quarrel resulting from a long standing board bill was aired in Judge W. H. Reeder's court this rnorningr, and the defendant, J. W. Jones, charged charg-ed with disturbing the peace, was found not guilty. Mrs. V. W Martinez, a rooming house keeper for colored people, was the complaining witness Mrs Martinez alleged that Jones owed her ?12.1 for room rent since last Aupisl and that she was holding two trunks as security She stated that Jones offered her $S to square the bill, and when she refused the offer he attempted to take the trunks by force and abused her when she prevented pre-vented him from carrying out his plans. The landlady and a lodges, Mnry Ballard, gave two dsamntlc recitals o fwhat occisrred in the house at 1S4 West Twenty-seventh street on December De-cember 20, when Jones was attempting attempt-ing to take his trunks. The women stated that the colored man had threatened to "cut" his former landlady land-lady Jones and his wife told stories equally dramatic, placing the blame on Mrs. Martinez Judge Rcedcr sumsned up 'the case and decided thnt there was not sufficient suffi-cient evidence to convict the owner of the trunks and discharged him. Henry McCulIough, charged with disturbing the peace by interfering with an officer, failed to appear for trial, and bail amounting to $25, put MP by a saloon keepei', was forfeited. forfeit-ed. The case agalsist S. Naka, charged with selling liquor unlawfully, was continued until Thursday morning |
