Show uu OFFICES ARE ALLREADY To Handle Great Number Num-ber of Parcels After the Midnight Hour ""Washing ton, Doc. 31. ..The first package to be mailed In Washington under the provisions of the new parcels par-cels post system will be deposited in tho city poBtofflco immediately after midnight tonight by Postmaster General Gen-eral Frank H. Hitchcock. Surrounded Surround-ed by officials of the department and by members of the board which has had charge of the work of preparation, prepara-tion, Mr. Hitchcock will help to inaugurate in-augurate the new service with a touch of official formality. Reports to the postoffice department depart-ment today from all divisions throughout the country Indicate that the equipment and the workmen are ready for tho great Increase of package pack-age mall matter which will be dumped on the postal service New Year's day. The system becomes operative at midnight mid-night and in all big city offices where an all-night service Is carried on, the forces will be strengthened for the earl morning business. While C0.000 postofflces will become stations for the receipt of package mail matter tomorrow, the great majority ma-jority of them will bo open only ;i few hours because of the New Year holiday regulations. Officials of the department hopo that tho increase of package business will therefore be gradual and that tho postal system will be able to adapt Itself to the do-mands do-mands of the new service before the end of tho week. |
