Show THAT $7.50 TRIP TO OMAHA. The morning, corporation sheet of course defends its masters. That was to have been expected. But it was not nccessarv to misrepresent mis-represent others in defending the powerful interests. For'instauce, the corporation sheet says that, "It was promised at Provo that if Colonel Roosevelt is elected, the people would ride from Ogden to Omaha for $7.50, arid have money enough left to buy a dinner at Cheyenne." No such promise was made at the Provo convention It was Mr. William Glasmann, of Ogden, Utah, who used the illustration illus-tration of the $7.50 fare to Omaha in his remarks on the platform , adopted by the Progressive convention in the state of Michigan as i an inkling what the Roosevelt platform might be. Mr. Glasmann I said, "If the railroads Ycrc to charge passenger rates on the basis , of the valuation of their property for taxable purposes then the passenger rate from Ogden to Omaha would be about $7.50 with a i free lunch thrown in at Cheyenne." ' 1 "We stand by that statement. Twelve years ago, when Mr, Glasmann was speaker of the Utah legislature, he called attention to the fact that railroad propertv was assessed on only 10 to 20 per cent of the valuation on which, the railroads charge the people passenger and freight rates, and he has never changod his opinion. He still is in the fight. It is bad enough for the Ogden Examiner to defend the soulless corporations that refuse to pay their just Ehare of taxes in support - -w - - . , ,, . i I, ,. , , ,, i , ,, m- of the state, county, schools and municipalities, without misrepresenting misrepre-senting those who arc trying to correct the abuses of. the present unjust and unfair system of taxation in this state. The official stenographer's reports will be transcribed in ,i few days and avc will then challenge the Examiner to publish the speech Mr. Glasmann made as permanent chairman of the Progressive Pro-gressive convention at Provo. He made a similar speech in the Utah legislature twelve years ago and the same was ordered printed by the House of Representatives. That speech is now bearing fruit. The "big interests" are thoroughly well equipped to take cure of themselves without the shedding of crocodile tears by those who, eager to obtain crumbs from their tables, truckle and fawn. |
