Show 00 mill FACE IiE ISSUES Roosevelt Congratulates ; Illinois Convention on Its Stand Chicago, Au?. 3. The Illinois state Progressive convention opened today with an enthusiastic demonstration tor Colonel Roosevelt. The convention conven-tion shouted, whistled and sang for nearly 1G minutes when a large picture pic-ture of Colonel Roosevelt was unveiled unveil-ed on the stage. Colonel Roosevelt sent a telegram to the delegates in which he congratulated congrat-ulated thorn upon their stand for a third state ticket. After Chairman MeiTlam had delivered de-livered his address and rules were adopted, a recess was taken to permit per-mit the delegates to select their committee com-mittee members. Colonol Roosevelt's telogram received re-ceived by Chairman Merriam was in part as follows: "I wish to congratulate the Illinois Progressives on their stand for a third ticket. This Is tho course that I am most happy to say has been decided upon In Indiana. Michigan, Missouri, and vhile, of course, there are certain states where the conditions render it unnecessary 1 am firmly convinced that it Is the course that must normally nor-mally be followed and certainly in all cases unless thero is a ticket already ln the field which the Progressives are willing to Indorse and the nominees nomi-nees on which are openly and without equivocation ln favor of tho Progressive Progres-sive olectoral ticket. It Is only through the Progressive party that we can hope to get tho people really to face the vital Issues of today." After a temporary organization had been effected the convention adjourned adjourn-ed until 2:30, when it was announced Governor Johnson of California and Gifford Pinchot would deliver addresses. |
