Show M JACK JOHNSON H DOWN AND OUT Hl (By W. W. Naughton.) 1 San Francisco. Nov. 11. "That's not H nportlng news; it's pollcp news." So H claimed a copy-reader on tho sporting H desk of a prominent paper once when H told by his city editor to handle a B story having to do with the shooting H of one race track man by another. H And he was right When A sporting H man, or a man from any other walk in life, becomes entangled in thei meshes of the law ho Is meat for the H reporter who keeps the public Inform- H cd in regard to crime and Its causes. H So much has beep written about 1 Jack Johnson and his lapse of late H that to add a jot of criticism to the 1 things that are being said would sav- H or of turning the hose on a drowned h rodent. But there Is a sporting angle H to the Johnson case -and It invites H discussion. It seems to the writer I H that Johnson has been eliminated as H thoroughly from the pugilistic outlook; H as though he had been signally defeat- H ed by some rival heavyweight. Even H the regret that one has not been round H capable of beating him is expressed H no more. The disgust at his alleged H misconduct is such that no one wants H .to think about him in any connection. H The Inst straw floated along when H Australian Mcintosh cabled his agent H to call off negotiations at once. Tho H action was so spontaneous that one H can readily Imagine how quickly the H feeling against tho big negro was H aroused in Australin when news of his H latest escapade reached there. H Loses Big Deal, H If tho deal with Mcintosh had gone H through Johnson would have received H $0,000, so that it may bo considered H he has been fined that amount al-H al-H I ready. And that in itself is pretty H severe punishment. H Of course there will be no Johnson - H Langford fight now eo far as Australia H is concerned, and there Is equally H small chance of the pah meeting In H this country or in England. The writ- M er in inclined to think, however, that m the tightelning of the coils about H Johnson so far as the boxing outlook H is fOncerncd is not bothering Jack. B Recent revelations concerning his private life faVdr a suspicion that Johnson had no serious thought or reentering re-entering tho ring and that he would like nothing hotter than to continue ip his present environment. The exposure made may make Johnson John-son feel like leaving this country for a while that is, If he continues a free agent and silch being the case he might entertain one of the offers placed before him some time ago by the Paris promoters. Will Reach All Over. ' There is a possibility, of course, that even Paris may withdraw its in-itntIon in-itntIon to Johnson to appear in a French ring, and If this is done the champion will bo as completely corralled, cor-ralled, pugllistically, as a steer in a pen, for the chair of disbarment will reach around the world. Even with matters as they aro there is a good chance for tho white hearles to engross public attention IT they havo sense enough to rise to tho ae-casion. ae-casion. White hopes have bloomed and white hopes have faded, but we still have with us Al Palzor, Jim Flynn and Luther McCarty and a three-corne-ed fistic argument among thssc having for its purpose the settlement set-tlement of tho question of superiority would keep the fires of interest burning burn-ing briskly for a year at least. So far nary a one of the hopes seems to bo displaying undue impa-' tlence to get at one of the others. lt( can be claimed in Palzer's case, of , course, that tho big Iowan was held back by the deadlock with Manager Tom O'Rourke. but now that amicable rolaions have been re-established Palzor Pal-zor should be heard from. What Is Flynn's Game? Just what Jim Flynn's little game Is is not made clear. A few months ago ho complained bitterly that he could not got a chance to show how good he was. Now he flits from. place to place and whan questioned concerning concern-ing hiB ring plans is wonderfully non-commltal non-commltal for Flynn. Even Luther McCarty or Luther Mccarty's Mc-carty's manager which is the same thing, accuses the fireman of being attacked with chilled feet whenover a Flyun-McCariy match Is suggested. AS for big Luther ho has remained unnef cover since his two-round victory vic-tory over Al Kaufman nhd has not i attempted to make capital out of the achievement. He is still in San Francisco, Fran-cisco, for all tho writer knows to tho contrary, and the sports hereabout aio ! wondering if ho has determined to re-tiro re-tiro from ring pursuits. "Nothing of the kind." said a friend of McCarty when appealed to. "Hero is tho situation. There is so much copipctltion between promoters nowadays now-adays that the business of matchmaking match-making has to be conducted with the greatest secrecy. That's why you hear so little of what is doing. "Don't lM3 surprised if you hear that McCarty and another prominent whito hopo are to box the first of a series of white heavyweight championships in San Francisco early in November. I would not say for certain, but I have nn Idea that McCarty's opponent will he Al Palzer." 1 If the event Is arranged It will most certainly arouso Interest. The San Francisco sports have seen just enough of McCarty to create a desire for more. They think his match with Kaufman was too brief and onc-slded to give nn idea of McCarty's general ring qualifications, but they arc willing will-ing to admit that he has one white hope essential to-wit, a terrific punch. |
