Forces , are at work In the senate to bring about radical amendments In the ' Sherwood 'dollar-a-day" pension bill, 1 which has passed the house. Sena- tors of both parties expressed today j disapproval of the dollar-a-day idea. The senate pensions committee now J Is compiling statistics to show Just j what the yearly outlay would be if t the Sherwood bill wore adopted. First 1 estimates placed It at sums ranging from $40,000,000 to 575,000,000 a year ; over the present heavy expenditures. The committee wjll report to the j senate a bill carrying much less ex- penditure of money, which, It be- lleves, In adldtlon to bolng generally $ satisfactory to civil war veterans, . would be one which the President V would bo willing to sign. jt i |
