The federal fed-eral grand Jury of the United States district court for southern California, convened here today to take up evidence evi-dence to be presented for the pur-poso pur-poso of showing that a gigantic conspiracy con-spiracy exists throughout the United States through which rynamltlng damage dam-age running Into millions of dollars has been dono to hulldings uuder construction and already completed; dynamite hap been transported unlawfully un-lawfully from one state to another, and perhaps that Improper use bad been made of the malls. While the government cannot indite in-dite or try. It Ib said, for lndLyldual dynamitlngfi, the men who brought them about aro liable under the conspiracy con-spiracy charge and for the transportation transpor-tation of the explosive unlawfully. A similar investigation Is being con-" con-" dlfcted'ln Tndlanapolls. The reason for nnohter grand jurv is said to be a vast amount of evidence evi-dence accumulated on the coas.t by detectives working under District At-lornc At-lornc John D. Fredericks of Ixjs Angeles county, for the purpose of convicting John J and J. B. McNa-Mara McNa-Mara for murder ln connection With the blowing up of the Los Angeles Times building. October 1, 1910. Further Fur-ther reasons are that both of these men are hero awaiting transportation to San Quentln penitentiary to begin be-gin serving sentences of fifteen years and Hfp imprisonment respectively: also that Ortle E McManlgal, who has confessed to many dynamitings and who was to have been one of rrfo state's principal witnesses In the case against the McNamara brothers, is I here. He has not been sentenced. -; Fredericks said today that McMani- ! gal would be required for many cases coming up ln California and that it would be Inadvisable at this, time to let him be taken elsewhere. This statement was considered to develop another reason for holding the grand jurv investigation out hero, namelj that mnnv witnesses who appeared before be-fore the grand Jury In the McNamara hearings live in the state and can be reached over night. The state has been desirous for some time also ot tracing the movements of Jaines B. McNamara after he came west from Indianapolis to San Francisco and began be-gan traveling up and down the const, i Witnesses probably will bp summoned sum-moned to tell what they may know of where McNamara went and what he did. and finally, who sent him-Fifteen him-Fifteen minutes aftor the grand Jurv convened Sheriff William Hammel ! was notified to haTe Ortle McMant-al McMant-al readv to be brought before that bodv.
