Show ASSISTANT RANGERS WANTED Tho Civil service commission will hold an examination for Assistant Forest-Ranger in Ogden on October 23 and 24 The United Slates department of agrlculturo estimates that -400 cligi-blcs cligi-blcs will be needed during the field season of 1912 Assistant Forest rangers are paid an entrance salary of ?1,100 per annum. Examination also will be held at national forest headquarters in Alaska, Alas-ka, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Min-nesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico. Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, "Washington and Wvo-ming. Wvo-ming. Tho law requires that, when practicable, practi-cable, forest rangers must bo qualified quali-fied citizens of the state or territory In which the national forest on which they are appointed is situated. Sinco tho list of local eligibles must be oxhausted before eligibles res.dlng in othor states can 'be appointed, tho chance of citizens of outside states who go to National forest states and tako tho examination to securo an appointmont Is small. The requirements and duties of forest rangers aro thus described In "The Use Boole," which contains tho regulations and instructions for tho uso of tho national forests "A ranger of any grade must be thoroughly Bound and able-bodied, capable of enduring hardships and performing severe labor under trying conditions. Ho must be able to take caro of himself and his horses In regions remote from settlement and supplies. He must be able to build trails and cabins, rldo, pack, and deal tactfully with all classes of people. He must know something of land surveying, sur-veying, estimating and scaling timber, tim-ber, logging, land law6, mining, and the livestock business. "On some forests the ranger must bo a specialist in one or moro of these lines of work. Thorough familiarity with the region in which he seeks employment, including Its geography and its forest and Industrial conditions, condi-tions, is usually demanded, although lack of this may be supplied by experience ex-perience In similar regions. "The examination of applicants is along the practical lines Indicated above, and actual demonstration, bv performance, is roquired. Invalid's seeking light out-of-door employment need not apply. Experience, not book education, Is sought, although ability to make simple maps and write intelligent in-telligent reports upon ordinary forest business is essential "For duty In somo parts of Arizona and New 'Mexico tho ranger must know enough Spanish to conduct forest for-est business with -Mexicans. "Whero saddlo horses or pack horses are necessary In tho performance perform-ance of their duty, rangers- aro required re-quired to own and maintain them Tho forest sorvlce furnishes no personal per-sonal or horse equipment. "Rangers execute the work of the national forests under the direction of supervisors Their duties include patrol pa-trol to prevent fire and tiospass, estimating, esti-mating, surveying and marking timber, tim-ber, the supervision of cuttings, and similar work. They issue minor permits, per-mits, build cabins and trails, oversee grazing business, Investigate claims, report an applications and report upon and arrest for violation of forest laws and regulations," Tho examination will consist of questions regarding tho use of the forest, supplemented by a field test to show tho applicant's fitness to do the actual work of a ranger.
