Show M UTAH'S SENATOR SEES A NEW LIGHT. H After announcing thnt the wool schedule of the Payne-Aldrich H bill' was the very best schedule of the very best tariff bill ever enact- j ed into law, Senator Reed Smoot has proceeded to offer a sugges- H tion to the House of Representatives as to how "Schedule K" can H be amended to meet the best interests of the country. lie would H levy a duty equivalent to 20 cents, instead of 33 cents a pound, as now, H on a scoured basis. He would make othor reductions on inferior H grades of wool. H " This is a most surprising statement from one who was so post- H live a few months ago that the wool schedule could not be Im- H proved on and who was so emphatic in declaring that to attempt a H revision of the tariff in any direction, either up or down, would H prove ruinous. H And yet our friend, the Senator, says that the Progressives are H demagogues in that they play politics simply to retain, or get into, H ' office. H We observe that some of the Standpat statesmen are able to H shift their point of view several degrees, if the exigencies of politics Hl call for a change of base. |
