Show FIRST STAKE FOR 1915 EXPOSITION SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 2. (Special) (Spe-cial) Tho first stake has been driven. There was no band and no speech-making, speech-making, but the physical work of the great Panama-Pacific International exposition Is already under way. It was bogun when the newly appointed director of works, H. D. H. Conuick, sent a party of surveyors to Golden Gate park to secure tho nccoasary data for a topographical map to bo used by the architects in laying out the plan for tho buildings of tho ex- I position. "The flrot work," Connick said yes terday, "is naturally the preliminary survey, and I have already sent men j to tho Golden Gate park and Harbor I View sections of the adopted site to bocuro what data was nccessarv. I "The result of; this will bo tho preparation of a topographical map, I Including the location of all the proposed pro-posed features. This map will be I ready for the architects when they 'shall havo been appointed. j "Tho method of approachlug the I problem is somewhat similar to that employed In making tho plans for the j buildings of tho University of Call- j fornla, when a topographical map of j the site was first prepared for the j use of the architects. j "As a matter of fact, a great part j of tho rcqulrod ,data Is available without field work. In tho city engineer's en-gineer's office we have not63 of sur- I veys and other data which cover a j great portion of tne ground, and for j making the map of the section covered cov-ered by the proposed marine boule- j vard we have all the maps of the gov- I Point reservations., Mile Rock Tunnel. "Tho first actual coustructlon undertaken un-dertaken will doubtless be sower and other underground, work. Thoro need not bo any prolonged delay in beginning be-ginning this. A& a matter of fact, the Wnrlr nf tl.l !, sn frlnanv c- nTflAA lo now being shapedLllo co-ordinate with the adopted plan for the exposition. I mean by this that the city engineer's office -is now de.vo.tlng its attention to such work as that of the Mile Rock tunnel, which will be necessary In connection with ,the exposition. "Tho surveys for this Mile Rock tunnel are already under way, and we have had a conference with Mrs Merrltt, the "representative of the Su tro estate, concerning some rights of way which will be necessary for the city to acquire '.through the Sutro property. This Mile Rock tunnel furnishes fur-nishes the outlet,- for the sewer system sys-tem of the west'part of Richmond and of Golden Gato park " Asks Part of Precldlo. The publicity department of the exposition ex-position yesterday gave out the following fol-lowing announcement: "The board of 'directors of the Panama-Pacific Inteniational Exposition company today f(jod application with tho secretary ofc'war for permission to use certain portions of Fort Mason and the Prosldiojfor exposition purposes. pur-poses.
