Show INO DAMAGE TO THE FRUIT CROP ' 'Reports From All Districts Are to the Effect That the Trost otf Wednesday Night Was Not Severe Fruit--Men Expect a 1 Prosperous Season New Methods of Marketing. , The cold spell of yesterday and last evening caused uneasiness on the part of horticulturists rogarding the condition condi-tion of the fruit crop, somo fearing that many of the tender buds were doomed to destruction. That fear was dispelled this morning when the gratifying grat-ifying word came from ahe outlying districts that the tomperaturo did not reach a point lower than 30 degrees above zero, and that no buds of any description were damaged in tho slightest degree. Fruit men say that tho temporaturo must run as low as 27 degrees above zero to damage the buds. Tho apilcot buds are far advanced and It would require a heavy frost to damage them at this time, and, besides, be-sides, the horticulturists maintain, they are robust buds and capable of enduring a great deal of cold. The peach buds are pretty well protected at this time, having not yet opened to the extent that they are affected by cold So that, both early and lata" arc In a condition Just now to pass through a pretty heavy frost. Manager C. M. Clay of tho Ogden Fruit Grower's association, sayB that his son, as a mattor of precaution, opened the smudge pots In their orchard or-chard near the Utah Hot Springs last night after 12 o'clock, but that It Is now known to have been unnecessary. Tho reports from all sections of the fruit belt of the northern part of the stato Indicate that no damage was done to the fruit last night Fruit trees, other than apricots and peaches, peach-es, aro not now in bloom and tho buds have not swollen enough to endanger them, evou in extremely low temperature tempera-ture Managor White of tho Utah Fruit Exchange states that tho prospects for the fruit crop for the season aro exceptionally bright In fact, ho savs, the outlook has not been better for a number of years, as the quantity and quality of the fruit, and the market mar-ket Georgia, Texas and other south- j ern districts, and castorn sections, have already suffered considerable damage to the orchards, -which Indicates Indi-cates that the western crop will have to supply the gToater portion of the frulti for the seaepn. Mr. White Is now arranging to move into office quarters on Washington avenue, between Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth streets, Ogden having been designated as headquarters for the state exchange Immediately after af-ter establishing his quarters," Mr. White will go east to Investigate the market conditions' and arrange for the sale of the fruits that will pass through the exchange. He will be awav for about two months, during which time he will visit all the southern south-ern marketer, Including Texas. Before returning Mr White expects to find a market for all the fruit that will be for sale by the associations that form tho exchange. It is anticipated that the results re-sults Bbould he much more satisfactory satisfac-tory than heretofore. 'Manager Clay of the Ogden Fruit Growers' association expects to be able to market, -through the Utah Fruit Exchange, a large quantity of the best fruit the country has known for some time past He says ho is satisfied that the horticulturists of the state are now approaching something like a correct business basis on which to market their products. The Pioneer Fruit company also will operate in Ogden this year, the managor mana-gor of the company- to arrive here In a short time At present C A.
