Show H SENATOR FRYE DEAD. Hj Maine has been a state productive of some of the brightest men H In our political history, and none of the distinguished statesmen from H the extreme northeast corner of this nation has had a more brilliant B career than "William P. Fryc, who died Tuesday at Lewiston, Me., Hj after serving over 50 years in office, the greater part of the time as L representative and senator in the United States congress. H A! brief biographical sketch is as follows : j ' He was born in Lewiston, Me., September 2, 1830, being nearly B 81 years of age. He graduated from Bowdoiu college in 1850 and K 'received the degree of master of arts from the same institution three B years later. Senator Frj-e studied and practiced law, was a mem- H her of the Maine legislature in 1861-62 and 1867, was mayor of Lew m iston in 1866 and 1867 and served three years as attorney general of M Maine; was d member of the Republican national executive commit- H' tee in 1872 and re-elected in 1876 and 18S0. H lie was a presidential elector in 1864 and a delegate to the Re- H publican national conventions of 1872, 1876 and 1880, being elected H'r chairman? of the Republican state committee of Maine to succeeed H '' James G-. Blaine, resigning in November, 1881. Having been elected H - a representative in the Forty-second congress, he began his long con- H! gressional career, serving as representative in the succeeding cou- H gresses until his election to the senate in March, 1881. H' The Political changes in Maine, which had come so swiftly as H to be a constant source of wonder, because Maine had been looked H on as an impregnable Republican stronghold, may have hastened the W death of Senator Fryo, although he was well past the three score and H ten mark. He was at an age that afforded no reserve vitality to H resist heart shocks, so that when Maine went Democratic and the M going out of public service of his colleague, Eugene Hale, foreshad- H owed his own defeat, the old statesman grew sick and gradually B passed away. |
