Show H j NEW CUBES FOR DISEASE. M ; . BBH Mcnjcal students, in their study of disease, arc making prog- H rcss inthc treatment of afflictions which have heretofore been Hj classed as incurable. Dr. P. "V. Nathan, who has been investigating IH the cause of rheumatoid arthritis, which produces stiffening of the jH joints of the body, has discovered a new and apparently successful H treatment. After reciting the theories advanced as to the origin of H this disease. Dr. Nathan says that, about four years ago. led by H Basch's experiments showing the influence which the removal of H the thymus gland had on the growth of the skeleton, he began 10 H ue the dried thymus gland of the calf for the treatment of rhcuma- B toid arthritis. The thymus is a small gland found in the neck of the B calf. Tt is believed to have an influence on growlh and develop- B ment of bones. No immediate benefit resulted from small doses, but B long continued administration sooner or later led to definite and. in B some cases, to striking improvement. After this treatment has been H lonlinued for months general nutrition begins to improve and the B stiffening of the joints gradually disappears. Dr. Nathan's conclu-Hksions conclu-Hksions arc that while this treatment must be combined with complete vl'st and improvement of nutrition, yet, when taken conscientiously mHBr a long time combined with judicious care, marked improvement, I j not a perfect curejcan always be expected. These results""are ITHHftscd on the records of 186 cases of which eighty-three were Severe. raH Iiu'h of the advancement in the treatment of diseases has been f'yffB" "y experiments on the lower animals, and the promise is held HjaHjMthal other great discoveries arc to come from that source. |
