Fred Burkeo, a gambler, was shot last night at 9 o'clock by his friend, William Wil-liam Farley, also a gambler, at the home of Mrs. Kate Hedge, 2 Goddard court, when a 3S-caliber revolver accidentally was discharged in tho hands of Farley while beating W. J. Casey with the weapon. Casey and bis wife own the Alden rooming house at 43 East Second South street, and have not been living happily together. Last night Casey niissed his wife, and drinking heavily during the afternoon, went in search of her to the home of her moj-hor, Mrs. Hedge, Finding the doors of the residence resi-dence locked against him, he started a row by throwing his body against the doors and cursing hi6 mother-in-law with threats that he would kill her. In the room with Mrs. Hedge were Burkee and Earley, who commanded com-manded Casey to desist and .go away. Casey continued his assaults on the dodr of the room which opens into the backyard, and Farloy drew tho revolver re-volver from his pocket and fired through tho door, tho bullet passing within an inch of Casey's head. Tho dauntless Casey then peeked through tne hol mado Uy the bullet and another bullot came through just above his hend He then mado a violent vio-lent plunge and tho door gavo way, admitting hint within range of Farley, who proceeded to strike him over the head with tho revolver. Tho gun Tvent off. Farley and Burkee, both say, accidentally, and Burkee who was standing near, received the bullet In the breast within half an inch of tho heart. Casey was booted Into the yard and upon recovering consciousness staggered stag-gered to the police station, bleeding from a long scalp wound. Detectives Cleveland, Howell and Patrolman Ecksted found Burkee and Farley nt their room, 159 East Second South street, whore they had gone immediately im-mediately after the affair. Burkeo was sitting in a chair with the blood flowing from his breast in a stream. Farley had already notified City Physician S. G. Paul. Both were taken to the station and Burkee was sent at onco in the ambulance by Dr. Paul to St. Mark's hospital. Dr. Paul will operate on him there some time todav. His condition Is very serious and "it is said that he has a small chance of recovery. Mrs. Hedge, who was in the room at tho time of the shooting, said this morning that Farley had engaged a room at her home and last night brought his friends Burkee there to spend the evoning; that alio understood under-stood thev had been rooming together at 159 East Second South street and wero on the best of terms, and that they wore on the host of terms, and that they were both sober and friondly when tho camo to her home last night. Farley told Police Lieutenant Hem-pel Hem-pel this morning that Casey outsido tho door of the Hedge home, had sworn that he would kill Mrs Hedgo when ho got inside the room and that ho shot to scare Casey, whom Jie feared fear-ed had a gun. Casey, who is also confined con-fined at the jnil, says ho knows nothing noth-ing of tho shooting of Burkee, having been knocked unconscious by the blow from Farley's revolver. Burkee before be-fore being taken to the hospital last night, confirmed the statements of Farley and did not in any manner blame Farley for his injury. |
