Show CHLOROFORMING WILD ANIMALS New York, Jan. 2G. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ani-mals has met a rebuff from the city authorities in its efTorts to have all wild animals in the city's zoos chloroformed chlor-oformed when they reach the age of 25 years. The park commissioner, in his reply to the society's petition, declares de-clares that lie is now convinced after an inestigatlon that no such rule rhould apply in all cases. He would sooner see the Osier theory of man's yenr.i of usefulness adopted, ho adds. hi support of his position, the commissioner com-missioner cites a 38-year-old rhinoceros, rhinoc-eros, Old Smily, who is in the Bronx .oo and is regarded as still in his prime, while Nellie, a Capo buffalo, with pink skin and white hair, has been in the park more than thirty ycar and is still well preserved. There arc beveral other animals in the menagene that have passed the socity's chloroform age and which are considered sound and healthy. To kill thorn, the commisbioner thinks, would be wanton destruction, as their longevity lon-gevity is proof that they arc contented content-ed under good treatment. |
