Show I Aggie Gridders Shape into Team Utah Aggie gridders "suited up" for the first time Monday and three complete teams were given several plays as Coach E. L. ( Idck) Romney got down to "serious business'' toward whipping whip-ping a squad into shape for the coming season. Tom Magliaccio, former Carbon gridder; Keith Anderson and j Bob Hickman, Logan high, drew j suits and Stan Follett rejoined j the squad awaiting further word I from army air corps reserve, j The veteran Aggie mentor took advantage of the rain storm to j stage a chalk talk during the j morning session, while the after-i after-i noon was devoted to the "T" of-t of-t fense. Three teams ran plays through "the machine" for nearly j an hour and then finished up with J sessions on he tackling dummy I and charging machine, j One hard-running backfield was composed of Blaine (Spike) Hav- I ward, Ernie Groll, Burns Crook-ston Crook-ston and Nick Caputo, while j George Cornia, Cliff Hoopiana, Follett and Wesley Blood formed ! another quartet that seemed to : pick up the intricate plays with- out too much trouble. Hoopiana probably will be one of the classiest backs in the area this season as the young Hawaiian combines speed, cleverness and weight with an effective change of pace, while Haywood may be I a find at the baU-carryins risht- half position. Romney emphasized to all his gridders, however, that team placements are experimental and that some backs may be shifted to the line and vice-versa de pending on their ability to' perform per-form in the various positions. Following a week of this type of work, the veteran Aggie mentor plans to hold his first scrimmage Friday or Saturday. The apparent spirit and enthusiasm en-thusiasm of the team and their wiUingness to learn, continued to draw prise from "the smiler" |
