Show ! WASHINGTON I NEWS : - 1 FROM OUR CONGRESSMAN W. K. GRANGE" POSTWAR RECLAMATION PROJECTS IX UTAH With concern growing daily over , postwar plans you may be inter-I inter-I ested in knowing of the blue- prints already completed on rec-j rec-j lamation projects. This inventory has been made for irrigation and multiple-purpose projects for construction con-struction in the postwar period, and has been presented to the Special committee on postwar Eco-nomcic Eco-nomcic Policy of planning, having hav-ing an estimated over-all cost of approximately three billion dollars. dol-lars. Some 18 of these projects, costing about $165,000,000 are within the State of Utah. Fifteen of the eighteen projects planned for Utah involve the delivery of water to 90,500 acres of new lands and supplemental supplies to 268,-900 268,-900 acres of lands not having an adequate irrigation supply; while the remaining three are power and flood ' control projects. As the investigations proceed, changes may be expected and it is my hope that additional projects might be added for this State. The following is a thumb-nail description of some of the Utah projects contemplated: GOOSEBERRY PROJECT The Gooseberry project area includes in-cludes 20,000 acres of agricultural lands now inadequately irrigated in northern Sanpete valley in the vicinity of the towns of Fair-view, Fair-view, Mount Pleasant, and Moroni, Mo-roni, Utah. A supplemental water supply is to be furnished these lands by diverting water from Goosebery creek, a tributary of Price river, and from Huntington creek, a tributary of San Juan river, both in the Colorado river basin. The waters from these streams are to be collected by a system of feeder canals and stored in a reservoir to be constructed con-structed at the Mammoth site on Goosebery creek. A tunnel approximately ap-proximately 2V2 miles long will convey the water from the reservoir reser-voir to distribution systems on the western side of the divide. EMERY COUNTY PROJECT The Emery County Project will provide a supplemental water supply sup-ply to 34,000 acres of irrigated and arable land now served from Huntington and Cottonwood ireeks, tributaries of San Rafael river. Storage of water is con-emplated con-emplated at the Joes valley re-;ervoir re-;ervoir site on Cottonwood creek. 3LUFF PROJECT This project is located on the 3an Juan river near Bluff, Utah, ts purpose is power production md flood control. Next week I will complete the Bscussion of these proposed pro-lets pro-lets as they effect Utah. |
