Show HEARING EXPECTED ON NEWTON DAM PROJECT A rehearnig on the war pro- duction order to end construction construc-tion on the Newton dam is expected ex-pected by the Utah congressional delegation and federal agencies involved, Frederick P. Champ, chairman of the Logan chamber of commerce military projects committee, announced today. Responses have been received from the WPB, the bureau of reclamation and congressional delegates on his committee's appeal ap-peal to resume wrok on the reservoir reser-voir project on the basis of its wartime necessity, Mr. Champ said. The bureau of reclamation has requested a rehearing at which the office of food production produc-tion has been asked to appear. Replying to Mr. Champ's request re-quest that work on the project be resumed, the WPB said: "The Newton project was one ' of several projects reviewed by the WPB. This review was dictated dic-tated by the urgency of direct military demands on materials, equipment and manpower. This action was not a reflection on the value of the project, but rather a re-evaluation of this and similar sim-ilar projects in the light of the need for general conservation of materials and- equipment to make possible the early completion of such programs as synthetic rub s' ber, 100-octange gas, etc. "In many cases, projects that were stopped had most of the materials on hand. The intention, in these cases, is to divert materials ma-terials to projects more closely related to military needs, thereby I accerelating construction and production. I "The Newton project, and other ! meritorious projects, should not be- considered as cancelled, but merely as deferred until the time when work can be resumed, either without interference to the j war effort, or as a part of the , reserve of valuable public proj-' proj-' ects to be prosecuted after the war is over." Mr. Champ said the attempt to obtain a rehearing" of the order has the full support of the Utah congressional delegation and other Washington officials. "It is hoped, he said, "that in view of the availability of materials ma-terials and labor, its constribu-tion constribu-tion to the food production program pro-gram and its direct relationship to the security of a vital railroad rail-road link which is threatened by the condition of the old dam, that we will get the green light on this project from the WPB at least for a partial resumption of work on the dam." |
