When the IDEAS of the men are the IDEALS of men then they become a conquering army, an invincible hOst. Idealism is not an escape from reality. Idealism IS reality. Only as we look upward, only as we climb upward together, can we permanently realize any of out hopes of a better way of life for ourselves, as individuals or for ourselves as a United States in a world of United N.itiont Our nation was formed by people peo-ple of diverse nationaliites and traditions drawn together by a belief in the basic ideal of. freedom free-dom and equality for all. Today as a nation we have expressed this ideal in the Four Freedoms. These freedoms are not for one group, or for one class, or for one ere ad, or for one color. They are for all the peoples of all the earth. And it is through the practical application appli-cation of these ideals that .ve will win not only the war but the peace to come. Go back over the history of our nation. When ideals have been ignored, disaster has threatened. When ideals have been adhered to, the nation has grown. It was the. idealism' of freedom -the.: founded America. It was idealism ofthe home that settled it. It wa the ideal of the sanctity of man that shaped it. It was the idealism of understanding that gathered it all the best of differ- cnt groups and different faiths and made it the greatest nation on earth. The cornerstone of this nation is the acceptance of tne agreement that we men' of different backgrounds back-grounds and faiths will work t -gcther for the good of all. We have a traditional ideal of brotherhood, broth-erhood, regaralss of class, creed or color. We have taken on the responsibilities of unity, the acceptance ac-ceptance of the burdens of others, the will to work with and for our fcilow men. |
