Show Railroad Panorama by Hugh F. O'Neil The fasinating story of the railroads rail-roads is told by A. C. Kalmbach in "Railroad Panorama," recently published by the Kalmbach Publishing Pub-lishing company at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A chapter on streamliners describes des-cribes the inauguration of this new type of fast railroad service by the U. P. R. R. on January 31, 3935, when the first train of this class was placed in service between Salina and Kansas City. This was followed by the Chicago to Portland Port-land train, the City of Portland, which was placed in service on June 6, 1935. It is quite surprising to know that despite all the modern streamlined stream-lined equipment of the present that the world's speed record for a railroad train was made on .June 12, 1905 when the Pennsyl. vania Special of the P. R. R. attained at-tained a speed of 127.1 miles an hour for a distance of three miles. This record has never been officially offic-ially bettered. The author makes an error, however how-ever quite common with many writers, in mentioning Promintory Point as the place of the union of the first transcontinental railroad. The Union and Central Pacific railroads were joined at Promontory Promon-tory and Promontory Point is a station on the present Southern Paciic railroad, and is located a-bout a-bout 30 miles from historic Promontory. |
