Show Hemlock Causes Death of Sheep Hemlock the poison responsible for the death of that famed Greek philosopher Socrates is cauoing the death of sheep trailed through central Cache Valley, according to James O. Stewart, supervisor of the Cache National forest. "During the past few years," Mr. Stewart explained, "sheepmen who have trailed their herds through lanes from the old Logan sugar factory grounds southwest of Logan Lo-gan to Nibley, have reported slight to heavy losses of sheep due to poisoning." A ball plant, with carrotlike foliage, was found growing along fences and irrigaii:i ditches. Suspected Sus-pected of being th? cause of the poisoning, specimens were collected by the forest service and sent to the department of agriculture. Washington, D. C, for identification. identifica-tion. Recently Mr. Stewart received word that the plant is poison hemlock, hem-lock, not native to North Arierica, but introduced many years ago" from Europe. Mr. Stewart said that ''while few grizzled sheepherdrs admit little interest in how Socrates met his end, they are concerned about losses to their herds caused by the hemlock." |
