Show Air Corps Will Leave USAC Training Detachments Dropped From 70 Colleges Abandonment of the college training detachment cf the army air corps training program at Utah State Agricultural college was revealed Saturday by the army air forces when they an. nounced return to civilian users 70 colleges now utilized in the C T D program. The war department announcement announce-ment said that students now in training at these institutions will complete their courses but in the future no new students will be assigned to these establishments. The move is designed to "shift emphasis from training of vast numbers of new men to training of replacements." The AAF announcement emphasized empha-sized that "elimination of any particular college or civilian contract con-tract does not reflect dissatisfaction dissatisfac-tion relative to the performance of the school." Major Wallace M. Diehl, commandant com-mandant of the local training detachment, de-tachment, said he has received no notice of the action and could Y make no statement until an official of-ficial explanation is received. College officials in charge of the program announced they recently re-cently signed a new contract with the army air forces providing for an extension of the regular program. However, they pointed out, the duration of the programs are never specified in the contracts. con-tracts. March 15, earlier filing is desirable. desir-able. If aviation students now in training at the college are allowed to complete their regularly scheduled sched-uled work before the program is halted, . it will be almost five months before the newest group of students leave the campus. However, students are being graduated at the rate of from 100 to 200 a month, so the policy soon will effect a marked reduction reduc-tion in the military personnel on the campus. If the air corps program is withdrawn, it will leave the navy-marine navy-marine radio training school and the army engineering detachment still on the campus. Thomas F. Green, manager of r the Logan-Cache airport, pointed out that the announcement does not mean the airport will be closed down." We are continuing on the current basis until June 20, at which time the CAA act . of , 1939 terminates. We now are negotiating to secure another training program, either military or civilian to follow the present CAA work." |
